Hey Chaps! Which MacBook would you go for? (or none!)

I had a 14-hour flight a few days ago and I had my Macbook Air 15" version with me as my media center companion. I used it with 50% brightness and it still had 35% battery when we landed! That battery life is insane! My previous laptop was a Surface Laptop Studio and that lasted for around 6 hours...

Don’t sleep on refurbished Macs. I got a 10 CPU/32 GPU M1 Max 14 with 64 GB unified memory and 2 TB of storage from an authorized reseller for $2100. Aside from a plain white box with factory refurbished labeling, you wouldn’t know it wasn’t new.

I have bought recently a base model M1 air (a last batch with discounts) and happy with it since it is my first macbook ever. Base model because I have beefy powerful windows laptops to do my work and I have never used macos before (new). I use it only for simple things and watching stuff/browsing before sleep. Selling point for me: 8 gb ram is trully enough for basic thing and small office work, fanless (dead silent), excellent battery, farily good screen (a bit worse than OLED but still very decent), and most importantly a solid milled aluminium block chassis which feels thus there is almost no keyboard flexing. Excellent purchase I would say.

I got a great deal on an M2 MacBook Air from eBay for £750 and couldn't be happier. I still think the best way is to sell your old tech and upgrade for less. These M series MacBooks are so powerful that most people will be happy with an M1 MacBook Air. I just wish they would start setting 16GB as standard. I bet it's the first thing people upgrade when buying new.

You definitely gave my brain a good workout trying to keep up with your rapid fire delivery, but in all truth, your explanation is the best I have found. Thank you. Cheers!

I bought the M3 Max 16 inch. Upgraded to 128GB and 8TB to avoid over heating and some future proofing. I use it for daily E-Mail, YouTube and some light porn on the weekends. So far it handles this work load reasonably decent.

I got a M1 Pro for Christmas with 16 gigs of ram and this thing is a beast.

I wouldnt be mad, then again, MKBHD hasnt upgraded yet and thats good enough for me.

I went with the 14" M3 Pro 18gb ram 512gb storage, was on sale for £1750. I was going back and forth between that and the 15" Air M3 16gb 512GB at £1530 sale. Kept my last Mac for 6 years so that bit extra for a better screen, speakers, active cooling, ports, processor, ram I think will work out better in the long run.

The main reason I would choose a Mac over Windows is battery life. My base MB Air M2 is used for 2-3 hours daily, and I do not need to charge it for four days. In standby, it sips about 2% in 24 hours (tested), and when I open it, it is ready to go; I find most Windows laptops have either shut down or some form of hibernation. The Windows machines last less than half a long, which is a pain, so your battery health will degrade twice as fast.

My M1 MB Pro 13 is 3.5 years old and still at 98% (I only charge 90% as that is enough for 12+ hours SOT!).

As this video implies, the MB Air is powerful enough for most ultrabook users, and the base M3 is an absolute bargain at around £1040 (Amazon). Most people will find 8GB of RAM more than enough, especially for browsing, office work, social media, watching videos, etc.

People complain about the upgrade costs, but if you take a step back and look at the bigger picture, you see that Apple offers a premium product at a very reasonable price for that demographic with those base models. Their 16GB/512GB MB Airs are similar in price to nearly every Windows premium ultrabook (XPS 14, Galaxy Book4Pro, LG GRAM 14, Surface Laptop 6, etc). So it is a bit of a misnomer about the upgrade costs for the base to 16GB/512GB, more a misunderstanding of basic demand-side economics.

I sold my MB PRO M1 14' for an M3 Air 13' and I'm delighted.

I can't see any difference in terms of screen size / quality on a day-to-day basis (I don't watch films on it) or usage (no games or graphics apps, but lots of office work), but in terms of weight it's a real boon.

I don't regret my purchase at all.

I can’t understand you must close the M3 MacBook Air to use two external monitors. Apple can let us turn off the internal screen without closing it, so that you can use the built-in trackpad and keyboard with two external monitors.

Thanks. Watching this on a dinosaur 13" MBP from 2015. It's lasted a good while, but by the point it was 4 years old, couldn't handle video editing. Still, it has well outlasted the 2010 13" MBP that had a hard disk drive that broke at under 5 years old. MBP 14" M3P would probably be right for the video editing ability, as most of what I use the computer for is photo and video.

I so wish the Macbook Air came with more than 8GB of RAM for the base model. The extra US $200 creates a bit of hesitation and forces me to think they could have made 16GB the standard, even if they had to bump up the price by $50-$100 and the result would be virtually no negative press, everyone would have a machine they'd be happy with, would be good for longevity, and none of this 8v16 discussion.

What i love about my macbook air m2 is the battery life. I can go to a cafe without bringing my charger. Or even go out to work and still have like 50% of battery life at the end of the day which was really awesome to me coz its less hassle bringing charger. My routine now was bringing my MBA at work charging it only every 2 days. 😊😊😊

I feel that the pro products are a very good investment because you won’t have to upgrade for a very long time.

I got the base M3 macbook pro, I'm just a student and don't exactly need the power but just prefer a high refresh rate screen and the IO, 8GB RAM not really a massive problem for me either, love the laptop so far though

On the Mac vs. PC pricing debate, I would actually counter that, even though Macs are more expensive, they still make sense financially. Hear me out lol. Any Mac, though particularly base spec model of each line, can be re-sold or traded in for a reasonable amount of money anytime from purchase through 3-5 years time later. If you deduct that residual value from price paid, it’s much closer to buying a PC that will lose 50-80% of its value the day you buy it. Seriously, if buying a PC make sure you’re in love with it because if you try to sell or trade it you will always take a massive bath. Microsoft Surface devices aren’t quite as bad, but yeah it’s still bad haha.

Recent example: I just bought a 14” M3 MacBook Pro on Amazon for $1699 and sold my year old 14” M2 MacBook Pro for $1400 locally. I get the newest model every year or two for the cost of a disposable $300 Walmart PC laptop. (Well even less really with 5% Amazon cashback)

I bought my mom the Samsung s9 fe is s a dream. Everything works incredibly, the experience is amazing and you couldn’t tell it costs 400€. I was obsessed with the macbook air 15 with the m3, but ended up not buying it because of the ridiculous price of 1370€ if it was shipped from another country and 1700€ if I were to guy it from my country. This price is ridiculous for a laptop that has 60hz, doesn’t come with touchscreen and has only 2 usb c ports. I am truly disappointed with the prices on these apple devices, including the most ridiculous one, the ipad with the m4

I believe the purpose of the 14” pro is simply to nudge you towards the M3 Pro variant. For $200 you can simply get the better one and that’s how Apple is a pro at stretching your budget.
