It’s no secret that one of my favourite shows of all time is ATLA, it is my comfort show, it brings me so much joy and Azula is hands down one of my favourite characters of all time. I mean she’s an icon.

This gets even sadder when you realize Azula was the younger sibling. She may have thought that this was one of the reasons Ursa played favorites and it probably reinforced Azula's obsession with status.

Azula is no less a victim of Ozai's abuse than Zuko. She deserved better. She deserved to grow up with a father who saw her as a daughter, not a living weapon, a mother who loved her, who didn’t fear a potential ticking time bomb. She deserved to grow up with a brother who saw her as someone to play with, to protect and be protected by. She deserved love. But she didn’t get any. Because war’s cruelty is second only to those who start and perpetuate war.

I like how during the final agni kai mid fight Azula see’s her mother once again (like several times during the song) but i think that’s reminding us the whole reason why azula lost the fight AND her mind in the first place.

I miss Azula, when Azula told her brother and friends "My own mother thought I was a monster, she was right, but it still hurt." it was a cry for help.

"Some people are born lucky, others are luck to be born."

In hindsight, Azula was the one lucky to be born, she was a prodigy but she was a perfectionist who worked for it harder than anyone else, she never felt loved by anyone, even Iroh thought she was a monster who needed to be taken down and never bothered to help her, her mother abandoned her, her friends abandoned her, Zuko had his mother and uncle, Azula was left to their abusive father and twin aunts...

There were warning signs of her mental breakdown in the beach episode, everyone else was rekindling friendships and starting romance, Azula on the other hand clearly wanted love and affection, but was rejected out of fear, and when she tried to get a people to like her she went off about 'world domination' because she thinks the only value she has is as a weapon or in her status as a princess.

Azula is both a terrifying and tragic villain. She’s the younger sibling, and suffered abuse just like Zuko… the fact she breaks the way she does is so heartbreaking. 😭

During the animatic, we never see Ursa's eyes (even if they are mentioned) We get the impression that Ursula is distant, judging, looking down on Azula and fearing her.

But in the end, we do see her whole face, and there is nothing but love. I remember the official Avatar YouTube channel saying that Azula doesn't want to accept that her mother did love her, because that would mean that she doesn't have to act the way she does, but she thinks has gone too far to just turn back.

The build up to the quicker section is just perfect! And, I have rambled before in comments about Azula but this song also really strikes a chord with her character. "When you're raised in war...", some people don't take into account that Azula is not only the younger sibling but is one of the youngest main characters. The main cast of Avatar (for the most part), are children.

Azula is a young child raised during a time of great war, in an extremely strict, and honestly toxic nation, under the rule of a dictator, who happens to be her father. She was "born lucky" and Zuko was "lucky to be born". That mentality, everything Azula does, says, she is like 13 in this show. I can see why she behaves like she does, its no excuse but she is a terribly broken girl. And I like that this song showcases that "You can't be hurt if you strike first." That is almost her entire character summed up.

Good work! Love the visuals, and some really good lyrics. I like the story-telling in your songs, and this one is a banger.

This animatic feels so spot on in so many ways.. The art style just fits Azula and helps emphasize the intensity of the extremist mentality she wrestles with, in a way that doesn't come across in the original cartoonish style of the show.
The lyrics and images really capture her mindset and concisely put all the parts of it in sequence, from her past, to her justifications, and to the emotional rollercoaster she went through during the show.

Amazing work.

Azula hesitating in a moment of being haunted by the image of her mother in the flames and Zuko coming at her was an inspired twist to add. Really nice way of bringing her struggle visually into that fight, and simultaniously underline the 'destiny' like conclusion of Zuko as the embodiment of their mother.

I think her mother did love her but just was also scared of her and what she'd do. If you read the comics you see that the mother was also being a**sed and she wasn't really even allowed to interact with her daughter. Basically the fire lord was just a complete monster and made his family suffer because of it.

I feel like people literally forgot Azula was abused too. She might have not gotten it physically but she got it mentally, she was treated as a weapon for war. Her own mother thought of her as a monster and no one was there for her. And yes her friends was there from the start until the betrayal. And the thing people mostly forget is that Azula is still a child, she is fourteen, a child who is longing for love, care and attention..And yet that wasn't given to her.

Probably the best thing that ever happened to Zuko was getting banished. Taken out of that twisted environment, he had a chance to flourish and discover who he was away from all that brainwashing.
