What is a short circuit? What is a short to ground?

My thought is: I think it is better not to say: "electricity was stopped short", because actually it is not stopped at all. It just finds better way to its precious "ground". This is why it does not go the way it should.

I think that "SHORT" is better described as: "short" lets electricity (flow of electrons) bypass to their precious "ground" (destination that every electron is dreaming of) or closer to it without doing the job that were supposed to do before going to "ground". Electrons is always looking for the way which has lower impedance and "SHORT" way has resistance very close to zero. And this is bad, because your system (machine) normal functioning depends on the work that was not done by lazy bypassing electrons. Also, because "SHORT" way is so desirable by electrons that almost all of them suddenly tries to bypass that way at the same moment of time. This creates "traffic jam" for electrons, builds up heat and "SHORT" way burns out and kills closest electronic components.

Short circuit is merely a shorter path than was intended. It could be to ground or around a component. Open circuit is merely the discontinuation of the circuit. It's open like a switch in the off position.

final a video that explains shorts well, thank you. Only took me 7 years to find.

Thanks Louie this video has helped me as an Automotive technician as I attempt to enhance my skill with electrical. I was never really sure what a "short to ground" really meant but this short simple explanation makes sense to me.

Thanks, I've learned so much by watching this.

love it..had a question on fixing a car circuit and after watching your few hour old video I'm watching a 7 yr old video..good stuff

I think the better idea is "short" as in "shortcut". Since all electricity wants to go to the ground, if anywhere in your circuit you give it a shortcut to where it wants to go (short to ground), it won't bother passing by the rest of the circuit since it sees an easy way out.

Hi Louis: Sorry buddy but I think you need to have a rethink on your ideas, for example: The blown transistor or resistor towards the beginning of your explanation are instances of Open circuit, not short circuit.

Thank you so much for your explanation you explained it very well, a sure proof of your clear understanding . Keep up the good videos Sir.

Short circuits are a very interesting topic indeed. If you start to study about the differences between the circuit's GND and Mains Earth GND, especially about how are they wired in PC ATX power supplies/other switching power supplies, you will learn something that you will never forget in your entire lifetime.

A short circuit (sometimes abbreviated to short or s/c) is an electrical circuit that allows a current to travel along an unintended path with no or very low electrical impedance. This results in an excessive current flowing through the circuit. The opposite of a short circuit is an "open circuit", which is an infinite resistance between two nodes. It is common to misuse "short circuit" to describe any electrical malfunction, regardless of the actual problem.

I got a great info from you
thank you so much bro ..

So each components before the short should get very hot right...? But why people always found a single hot spot by the thermal camera and said that point is the problem?

I got one on my truck. Battery keeps going dead. I disconnected the negative on the battery, hooked my test light to the negative and touched the frame and it lit up. It means I have a short to ground. Now I guess I pull fuses until the light turns off? Then chase out the bad circuit?

Kramer on Seinfeld used to stop short.

A motorcycle technician video I watched said that, a short circuit is too little Resistance in relation to the available Voltage. Does that sound about right?

hi there. I just want to know if this "shot or stop" same as house hold electrical circuit. as far as I know, short in household electrical is when two lines are connected each other and creates high volume of charge then eventually fuse will break. Correct me if im wrong. Thanks

in a short circuit, the current doesn't stop. If it stops it is an open circuit. A short circuit is when current takes an unintended path to ground...

on the case of the capacitor, since one end is always connected to ground, wouldn’t the circuit short to ground anyways once the charge is released? or does the electricity never pass through to the negative side and the positive side only continues the circuit
