I feel for the guy in #6. I was on the engineering staff at a large resort in Phoenix and was 3rd on the food chain and my phone rang in the early hours of Saturday and it was my boss telling me half of the resort was down and could I get there as soon as I could (I lived the closest) so I went over there and as I pulled into the parking lot, I say a back hoe operator sitting in his equipment with his head in his hands and his boss raising Holy Hell with him. I walked over, looked at the hole and knew EXACTLY what had happened before I even got to the "as built" drawings. I told the guy's supervisor to stuff it and leave the poor guy alone that it wasn't HIS FAULT. I had to have him removed from the property because he got stupid with me. I went into the shop and pulled out the "as built" drawings which are the FINAL SET OF PRINTS showing the EXACT LOCATION of everything, got out my tape measure and went up and using the "as built" drawings, measured where the dude was digging and color ME surprised, they were OFF BY 15 FEET. The location was marked EXACTLY where the drawings showed, but was OFF BY 15 FEET. When he started digging, he pulled up a main feed and shorted it back to the transformer. The back feed also fried a bunch of my pumps for our chiller system, shutting down the A/C for the entire building. Once the power company replaced the massive fuses, I had to wire around the pumps just to get the A/C back on line. FORTUNATLY the chiller controls weren't effected. I took the backhoe operator to our break room to get him something to drink and told him AGAIN, it wasn't HIS fault.
Needless to say on Monday, I had a VERY INTERESTING DISCUSSION with the general contractor and the nit wit supervisor from the excavating company. I was told by people in the resort that the building shook when the transformer fuses blew. And we didn't have security cameras installed yet and if we would have, it would have been AWESOME to see the flash when the fuses blew.
