Dark Matter Could Be Due to Extra Dimensions

Physicists have come up with a new idea for how our universe began, and it could also explain dark matter. They say that if our universe has small extra dimensions, then these can temporarily store energy, causing a “cosmological stasis” in which the universe expands but nothing else happens. Then the stasis ends and dark matter remains. Sounds wild. What are we to make of this?

"this new theory comes with no strings attached", LOL. Don't ever change.

After "it comes without strings attached" I laughed so hard that I missed what you were saying and had to rewind

I love to drink coffee and watch your videos. It makes me feel smart. I don't have a clue what you are talking about but its the feelings that matter!

How long before we understand the gravity of the situation.

I saw Tower of Particles in concert. Groovy!

this sounds awfully close to the string theory without explicitly using the word "string"

"Ups and downs" when talking dimensions.

Respect.

I think that extra dimension are kind of like a cartoon world that you can really imagine anything in but never be able to observe anything.

Great video, Sabine! I really enjoyed your explanation of how extra dimensions might lead to cosmological stasis — and the idea that dark matter could be leftover particles from this “tower” is fascinating. Also loved your final verdict… “mathematical fiction” made me laugh. Thanks for always making complex physics so accessible (and entertaining)!

Thank you Dr. Sabine. Your clarity and humor makes these videos just wonderful.

I have a love-hate relationship with questions like "Why are there three dimensions of space?" On one hand, they are fun to get lost in and uselessly ponder other possibilities. On the other hand, there is no possible answer that could be fully satisfying.

Today, I'm just happy they created another opportunity to hear some great Sabine trademark puns.

The funny thing is extra dimensions don't need to be compactified - maybe we just don't recognize them because we don't know how to move along the q or s axes. It's like a etch-a-sketch or a flat land situation

Thank you for the work you do. Your channel is a diamond in the rough!

You know Sabine, this is the first cosmological issue I have heard for a long time, which did not sound like utter nonsense. (Except for the added dimensions, Ups and down and sideways?) Thanks for that. Bonus points for your humour, as always.

I was pretty excited when I learned that quasicrystals, while not periodic in 3 dimensions, in fact are periodic in 4, 5, or 6 dimensions. It doesn't mean those dimensions exist of course. Just a fun fact. 😅

Sabine, fascinating take on the particle tower and “cosmological stasis” — especially your point about the lack of testable mechanisms and how speculative frameworks multiply.
Have you looked into bimetric models like Janus cosmology, which aim to explain cosmic acceleration without extra dimensions or dark energy, using two coupled spacetimes and opposite Einstein constants?

Would it be possible, in your view, to reformulate Janus-type equations using Lie symmetries or other algebraic approaches, maybe to explore deeper conservation laws or hidden constraints?

Also curious if you think bimetric models can offer testable predictions, compared to the more exotic extra-dimensional ideas discussed here.

Thanks again for making these deep topics so accessible — and sharp.

3 dimensions are sufficient to construct an infinite number of dim theories

I think this is a marvelous bit of ratcheting down some people a few pegs. I really enjoy all of her videos, but this one was especially succinct and entertaining. And I'm saying this as someone who loves to play around with the idea of more dimensions: they can explain so much with such little effort.
