We have the the collective knowledge of mankind at our fingertips. My daughter can pick from 1000’s of cartoons and it doesn’t even have to be Saturday morning. Tens of thousands of games are available to me whenever I want— spanning all 40+ years of my life.

And people are angry they can’t play the newest thing on a PC they hold in their hand. 🤔

Handhelds as being a dad make the most sense, and I wish more gaming companies and phone makers would start doing more phone/console gaming. If Nintendo made a handheld, that also was a phone that had premium games instead of f2p games. It would really be a "game" changer.

My Steam catalog is more than 600 games and the vast majority of those run awesome on the deck. I've got a gaming PC for everything else.

The fact that we can play gta or halo mCC on the go is enough for me lol the machine is a beast. Being able to play anything flawlessly up to ps4 era makes the game library for steam deck almost unlimited.

My only gripe is how small text can be. I hope games make a handheld mode for readability going forward.

I honestly believe that proper handheld optimization need to have handhelds as a REAL "performance targets" and that target should take place throughout the WHOLE development cycle. Today we see a lot of AAA console games ported to PC that were designed around 4K and the performance levels of the PS5 and Series X. But personally I don't believe we need more performance than the Steam Deck. It's a super powerful device for 800p, but since games don't target 7" 800p most of the time, modern graphics just require crazy amounts of unnecessary calculations; calculations which are then often never perceived by the player OR even given a single pixel of screen-time. Games can be designed around scalability if it's a part of the development workflow. AAA studios just need to understand that handhelds are a super valuable market and target platform.

Calling a handheld weak for not running the next gen games at hight setting is wild in 2024 😂 .. back in the day handheld games were different versions completely... how entitled the American consumer has become

Dragon Age: Veilguard very modest specs highlights the possibility of something I don't think many have considered.

Around the mid 10's Games were all being developed with the more powerful specs of the PS4 and Xbox One in mind, and then Nintendo's handheld just... blew up. A lot of developers were left in the dust with the first Switch, because most of their games simply weren't designed to run on that weak a device.

There's been talk that some of the biggest companies aren't planning to make that mistake with the Switch successor, and are actively pursuing development of games in line with the Switch 2 specs. They don't want to be left behind again.

Because of the next year or so, we may see a shift away from bleeding edge graphics and specs and back down towards lower specced releases. These cutting edge releases with hardware melting graphics aren't really sustainable anymore.

If that happens... a lot more games than we've considered may end up running pretty damn on the Steam Deck.

the whole point about handhelds is to have your games on the go at a much lower cost and lower graphical settings. So far only Valve understood the message. The other companies trying to cram high end components in a handheld so they can charge laptop prices for it is insane

I'll always appreciate when new big games can run decently on my steamdeck but I'm not upset when it doesn't happen. I just assume it'll be able to play less and less. It's a gaming handheld it's natural. That said I really appreciate when devs put in the work to optimize and allow handheld pc gamers to play. I really dont think a lot of devs do the work anymore to optimize games. (Which is fine I'm not upset I think i have an idea of the current state of the industry and the pressure publishers put on devs etc) At some point in the next few years I'll get a solid gaming desktop but I already have a couple other consoles so it's not like I'm not already spoiled.

I did the 100% on PS5 for Final Fantasy 16, can't possibly consider paying another $70 for a Steam copy. I wish there was some kind of discount for buying games on multiple platforms and cross-progression too in some cases

Thank you for this video !
With FF16 and Bazzite on the Ally, choose Ge-Proton9-6 or Proton experimental. This fix most of the graphical issues.

You can overclock deck's ram and from that alone it provides ~20fps performane boost without additional battery consumption - just by 5500 > 6400 mhz and lowering some timings. Primarily such devices work best for older titles and as emulators, that's where they shine and meant for imo, but you have to spend time fixing controls, installing mods, patches to make things work, its a device for geeks.

It's less that handhelds are too weak, and a lot more that AAA games have become absolute garbage for optimization. But since almost all of them are also garbage for monetization, the better question should really be, why are we still even buying these? High end graphics do not a game make, and there's a lot better fare in the mid-tier, with a lot of those being much better optimized and running without a problem on handhelds. The moment enough of us start voting with our wallets and stop letting big studios push out unfinished crap that requires a high end PC just to brute-force past the unoptimized code/graphics handling, they'll get the message and start actually finishing their games again. Until then, though...expect more very pretty crap.

I have the original Ally and a modest gaming pc with a RTX 3080. I can run most games at high settings on my rig but I guess it's due to the smaller screen, I'm pretty ok at running my games at low-medium settings on my Ally. They actually still look super sharp and allow me to continue progress when I don't feel like being at my desk setup. Win in my books.
