The Wayward Queen Attack (also known as the Danvers Opening or the Patzer Opening) is one of the most common chess tricks played at the club level, which happens after the opening moves: 1.e4 e5 2.Qh5.

Of course, the main idea of White is to follow up with 3.Bc4 and checkmate you with 4.Qxf7# which is the Scholar’s Mate. Additionally, their strategy is to continue playing normal chess if Black (you) defend against the checkmate threat.

However, you should not let them get away with playing this weird, desperate attack. That’s why, in this video lesson GM Igor Smirnov teaches you the brutal way to punish this Wayward Queen Attack or early queen attack.

Thank you so much. My friend has already know to play Wayward Queen correctly, but I don't think he would know this surprising line.

Thanks for this video! You helped me crush my coworker who annoyingly always opens with wayward queen! It was 10 minute time constraint, here's how it went:

1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 Nf6 3. Qxe5+ Be7 4. Bc4 O-O 5. Nh3 Re8 6. Qf5 d5 7. Qf4 dxc4 8.
e5 Bd6 9. O-O Bxe5 10. Qxc4 Bxh3 11. gxh3 Qd6 12. Qg4 Nxg4 13. hxg4 Bxh2+ 14.
Kh1 Qh6 15. d4 Bf4+ 16. Kg2 Qh2+ 17. Kf3 Qh3+ 18. Kxf4 Qxf1 19. Nc3 Qxf2+ 20.
Kg5 f6+ 21. Kh5 Qh2# 0-1

Took up chess.. again.. after 50 years. Rated at 1150 ish and as I encounter different openings ( and in this case ..lost ) I check out your tactic recommendations. Thanks for your vids...Should take a while but I should turn out to be a decent player...at least in the first third of a match.

Thank you for this. Your videos are great. I'm low level elo, but have won the last several games in a row. I find those tricksters immensely resign when they lose their queen. Bunch of no chess-playing fools

Would you say this the new go to strategy to punish the early queen attack over the standard variations?

Your vids seem so cool. Seem? My opponents have never moved the way you say they most often do? So far I'm 0-14 when trying to apply your lines lol

another idea worth exploring is actually e4 e5 Qh Nc6 Bc4 g5, repelling the Queen, Most players will the play Qf3 and you could then play f5 shortly after. If white takes with Queen, play d5 IMMIDEATLY, with a discoverd attack on the Queen (Bishop on c8) while simultaneously attacking whites Bishop on c4, winning it.

Sure, it isnt as devastating as this, but it works too if you arent a fan of gambitting pawns.
