I swam with these guys in the late 70s in Crystal River, Fla. I didn't get too close- I'm a bad swimmer and they're big!! This part of Florida was so beautiful- the water absolutely Crystal clear. I haven't been there since 81 or so. I'm sure it's not the same. How sad. Why do we destroy everything we touch? The only way to save the beauty of this world, I think, is to hide it-keep it secret. We are such an invasive species our selves that we are the ones that should be in protected space. Save the planet. From our filthy selves.

It's unfortunate that these creatures are in decline because they're such sweet and gentle creatures. Their backs are often scarred badly from being run over by boats in shallow water. The props leave deep cuts, but they do heal up. I think Florida passed laws about boating in certain areas were the manatee seem to be more abundant in number.
