Matt and the Game Theorists estimated about $193, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000 (quintillion) for the Death Star’s cost, which fits into your range nicely.

So basically "Because Science" is now a medium for re-releasing Kyle's previously released videos?

I saw this for a moment and 2 questions appeared. "where is his hair and beard?!" and "why does this feel like his energy is at a all time low? then looks at 5 year old video

you missed an amazing chance to make an "Alderon? More like Alder-gone!" joke

Building a Death Star pretty much requires seizing the production capability and materials required for it. Which the Empire did. They didn't exactly pay for it. Then there is also the question of sourcing stuff that is pretty much unique to the Death Star. Like the power source and the main weapon.

"because science" parting ways with Kyle hill, and then continuing to re-upload old videos of his, is like breaking up with someone and then still continuing to post old pictures of them on instagram.

In a commentary track on the Star Wars Blu-ray release,  George Lucas stated that ships in the Star Wars universe can't travel in straight lines while in hyperspace due to collisions with celestial objects. Thus, distance is an important factor in how quickly a ship can get from point A to point B. The Millennium Falcon's superior navigation computer allowed it to travel shorter distances between points and arrive faster.

I knew the Death Star was big but the most mind blowing part of this whole video to me was the appearance of being 45x larger than the moon in an orbit at ISS level. Wow.

"Original air date 2015"
"Now airing for the first time"

Pick one.

Cool video, though I would assume the Imperial cost was much less, between super advanced tech and the near infinite amount of resouces laying around in a Galaxy, building one would be relatively easy, the superlaser on the other hand

I've also wondered about the "cost" of Federation starships on Star Trek even though they exist in a post scarcity economy.

I know this is from 2 years ago but I wanted to add something. The Death Star has a giant Kyber crystal that amplifies energy that is being directed into it. After a bit, it’s the fire out at a greater intensity. Kyber crystals aren’t really energy sources but rather energy amplifiers. There is still an external power source rather than the crystal itself powering the machine.

Jesus I can only pity the Imperial Accountants AFTER the Death Star blew up!

All the life-insurance, and then there was the construction of the Second Death Star!

Instead of blowing up Alderaan itself, could it instead cause all of the energy stored in the planet itself (the energy stored as heat and such) to release all at once to cause the explosion?
