How did I get tested for my autistic adult symptoms? In this video, I share my personal experience of getting an autism test as an adult for a formal autism diagnosis. How did I assess if it I was autistic with adhd or could it have been autistic or adhd? From the initial self-assessment to the full evaluation process (test). I dive deep into the steps I took, the challenges I faced, and how it all ties into my professional life in corporate America. I also discuss the importance of formal vs. self-diagnosis, insurance struggles, and the tools I used like Embrace Autism (where some autistic tests can be found for free). If you're navigating a similar journey or want to understand more about autism and ADHD in the workplace, this video is for you.

The public healthcare did not want to diagnose me and I had no insurance, so I spared money to go to a private clinic which specialized on adult ADHD and autism. The tests were very comprehensive, so if anybody says that being diagnosed is easy does not know anything. Three long interviews, one with my son online telling about me, four long test papers, and finally nearly 5 hours of testing by a psychologist (memory - many different tests -, cognition, visual and linguistic skills, mathematical problems, other problems, sensory things, ability to concentrate, a great number of questions about how I feel and think and act). It was so exhausting that I slept 14 hours when I got home. The results were clear (ADHD and autism, but very good memory and cognition which has helped me to cope and mask), and it dawned on me that she had observed me all the time when I did the tests and that was a crucial part of the assessment. It was an ordeal, because I do not like to talk about my childhood (too painful) and the tests were very demanding, but it was necessary for me to know for sure. Now I understand myself much better and it has been very important for my mental health.

Thank you for sharing your story. I was diagnosed around the same age. I'd love to know about your second meeting a year later, and some of the resources that they pointed you to. And please keep making these videos, very interesting.

I have two questions I'm genuinely curious about.

1) With autism, how did you ever become a boss? Part of the problem of having autism is coming across as rude and immature, also not having huge amounts of social influence. I'm not saying it's impossible but it sure seems like there's a lot of pushback from higher-ups when it comes to how one handles people and the decisions that are made.

2) As a boss with autism, do people on your team or staff ever complain that you're a difficult person to work for? Has anyone ever personally suggested to you that you should not be a boss or questioned your competency? I know how quickly ugly things between people can get. That's why I'm asking.

I’m a veteran. I’m currently in therapy provided by the military. My psychiatrist and psychologist have told me the same thing after I had spoken to them both about wanting to get get diagnosed for autism. They both said no…there is no such thing for adults. I have ptsd from the military that sparked me to ‘unmask’ now I know this is me but I can’t regulate who I was before I unmasked.
