These men were just trying to live their life and be happy which is any heterosexual men and women are trying to do. Maybe he thought he could target homosexuals because at that point they were considered to be living on the fringes of society therefore making them less than like all the killers that target prostitutes. Just because he couldn't accept his homosexual tendencies he targeted and killed people "like him" Another tragedy is the surviving victims were afraid to come forward because their career would be ruined.

I’m not entirely surprised that those three victims didn’t want to speak up, considering how horrible they would have been treated. I mean hell, that’s one of the major reasons rape survivors don’t report - because of being ignored by police, belittled by the public or shunned by their friends and family. The exact same could have happened to those men by outing themselves and reporting.
