I'm training to be an assistant coach at my local team and my suggestion to play a 3 - 4 - 3 helped us get our highest league position in 4 years.
The wing back problem can be solved if one goes further up and one stays at the halfway line dropping back if necessary.

By compactness 3-4-3 formation is more important than 3-5-2. But I prefer the 3-5-2 because it gives extremely bigger space for wingbacks. But Those two formations are the same in one dimension

This formation is also cool at building up phase. The center defender can go forward, on the are of a CDM, making 3 in the midfield. Or the two wide defenders can go forward, and the LWB/RWB go center, making 4 on the midfield. Rudger and Azpilicueta did that often.

Xabi Alonso and Gasperini are the best implementers of the 3-4-3 with the wingbacks basically being forwards and the 2 wide CBs playing the role of wingbacks

Can you explain 4-1-2-1-2 too? I call it Diamond Midfielder Formation because the formation has 1 right mid, 1 left mid, 1 attacking mid and one defensive mid which makes the diamond shape between strikers and defenders. But you can replace the 2 side midfielders with 2 centre midfielders creating a smaller diamond.

My favorite is 4-2-2-2, because of the liberty the two midfielder have, they can be wingers, midfilders, attack/defend etc.
