I guessing he was tired of winning a race that only he was running.

I just can’t comprehend that. He basically lived his life being handicapped.

He built a prison for himself out of nails. It’s heartbreaking and impressive at the same time.

I would never make my life that difficult just for a record ...

It's remarkable how much those nails effected his hand--it looks completely different. I'd love to see a comparative xray between both his hands.

I come back to this video every once in a while. I think it fascinates me because I’m watching something that makes me genuinely emotional, but what he’s done is completely unrelatable as a physical action. I will never know what it’s like to cut off 60+ years of nail growth, but I can also see how monumental it is. This man has led a fascinating life, even if I don’t know much about it beyond what was said in the video.

I feel like there’s more to the story when it comes to the beating that led to his decision, but I guess there’s always more to the story when you’re a human being. His nails are like the physical manifestation of “everyone you know is fighting their own battle.” Navigating life physically was challenging enough, but in order to keep these nails you’d have to be making the same decision every day—even subconsciously. The fact that he finally made the decision to cut them is just so compelling in that regard.

Peace to him. Trauma is intrinsically tied to behavioral disorders. When the procedure was complete, His smile said it all🌷

He could hold two records.
1. Longest nails ever grown.
2. Longest nails ever to be cut off.

I give him credit he had so many years earned his plaque, but like now he can use his hands right, I can only imagine what the authritis or struggles he had endured felt like. Enjoy your new freedom wish you the best

The most astounding part of his accomplishment isn't his nails - but the pointless inconvenience he intentionally endured. He grew them because of some psychological issue but he obviously learned to enjoy the attention he received by keeping them.

So... he ruined his life to prove a point...?
A whole other level of stubbornness 😅

Wild. I remember hearing about this guy as a little kid back in the '90s. Didn't know he was still alive, much less still had the nails growing until a few years ago. If I recall correctly, he had to show them to TSA every time he went on a flight or something of that nature.

6:08 finally being able to rest/put his hand on something. And then holding that certificate with that hand. These must be totally new experiences for him.
