Is the Moza R9 the wheel to depose the Fanatec CSL DD as the default choice for those seeking a budget friendly direct drive sim racing wheel? The specifications are certainly impressive, and there’s lots to like about this wheelbase and the fancy light up Moza GS wheel rim.

Just a quick update. Moza have reached out to let me know that they'll take my feedback onboard (which is nice to see!). And, there is a 'damping kit' included with the GS wheel, which will reduce the sound of the shifters if you want. It was included in my review version, but I guess I missed it. It's a nice touch!

Further to the above, yesterday evening I received a software update which addresses the calibration of the paddles on the GS wheel. I've not had a chance to test it yet, but I'll update this comment when I've had a chance to set the wheel back up.

Now that Moza have released their budget friendly CS wheel I hope this company continues to grow and gain popularity. The CS wheel is meant to be really good for the money.

Unlike Fanatec, which needs at least a $200* Quick release with electronics in it to work, you can use any $30 ebay wheel with a standard NRG style quick release on the moza R9. So it's not locking you into exclusively using their ecosystem of wheels.

I really like mine, feels so premium compared to my old stuff. I cant compare it to a csl dd but the r9 feel as good as you would hope it does. The GS wheel looks beautiful and feels it too, they are both great and i have zero regrets. great review sums it up well!

Chris, I just want to say that I really like your voice and the way you present yourself on this video. You’re one step ahead of other sim racing channels because you are very talented as a presenter as well. I’ve been following you for years and you obviously developed a lot. Congrats for the content and keep putting yourself out there. Well done. Take care of yourself.

Love the look of that Moza R9.
Barry at SRG did a very in depth look at the interior.
The electronic components and soldering look to have been very well done.
I ordered mine with the CS rim. It should arrive within the next few days.
Can't wait.

I'm really pleased to see that this impressed you, Chris. I was sent a Moza R16 a while ago with the RS Wheel, but haven't had chance to use them yet - not got a rig strong enough...

I hope that once I get them up and running I have a similar, pleasant experience. I must say as well, good lord the forged carbon is beautiful.

Turn on the Hands Off Protection setting to stop the oscillations when you go hands off the wheel.

Will be interesting to see in 1-2 years how they will both fare (CSL DD and R9) in terms of reliability and RMAs

Awesome review! I've been looking at this exact combination for a while now, upgrading from a Logitech G29 which I've had and enjoyed for many years, but now it's time for something better. I'll have to wait a couple of months still because of an expensive honeymoon, but your review has convinced me that it will be worth the wait.

Whilst I am sure many people will be happy with the Moza and there are many great features, the problem for me is the way the warranty is managed. The hoops a customer has to jump through seem designed to discourage returns and repairs and the terms and conditions for the UK are actually illegal, not meeting the requirements of UK and EU consumer law. For me, this is a deal breaker.
Concerning the 'jumping' analogue paddles - they can't be fixed in firmware without reducing steering rotation granularity. It will require a hardware update to increase the data rate from the wheel. The current transmitter/receiver combination use RS correction for transmission errors but the chosen RX/TX radio serial comms pairing is not designed to cope with the level of error correction required at higher data transmission speeds. This really was a bad design choice and indicative of a lack of experience on the part of the manufacturer. As was the use of only one RX/TX channel which multiplexes all the data. Expect the steering to stutter when using several controls at the same time.
The pogo pins used for power transfer are a mixed blessing. Pogo pins are designed for use in electronics which are not changed often. They have a duty cycle of 300 insertions, although generally real world usage is three times that number. Pogo pins suffer from spring sag and both external and internal contact wear. They are also very prone to internal contamination and corrosion - they really should never be exposed to typical household contaminants such as dust, smoke, and dirt. There are many videos on the pros and cons of pogo pins in electronic projects - take a look. If you swap your wheel on a regular basis, the pogo pins may not last more than a year. The Fanatec has a common duty cycle of 3500 to 5000 insertions on the *female* (base) side and 8000/15000 insertions on the *male* (wheel) side. I note they don't mention this in the documentation; naughty Fanatec. However, once again you can expect about three times that in the real world.

About Moza R9.. I saw and tested this few days ago in one of Indonesian's Technology festival, the Indocomtech 2022 at JCC Senayan, Jakarta. The FFB's when testing the car is really a good one and could equal Fanatec's (which I do tested in other place, although I am Thrustmaster T300RS user big time.). This steering wheel set could be a good entry for Simracers in future as I think that the FFB's are really helpful and could drive well even though just testing it on one sim and with limited powers out there.

Only reason I didn’t go Moza was because it’s more expensive and boosted media said it’s not as “clean” as the CSL DD.. But close.
