Father Richard Rorh
The Christian Meaning of Enlightenment
Science and Nonduality Conference, 2011, San Rafael, CA USA

Richard presents the similarities, the differences, and the complementarities between the Eastern and Western understandings of transformation. Some have called the goal enlightenment, some salvation, some ecstasy, nirvana, or heaven. What is the goal of the spiritual journey according to the main line Christian tradition? What Christian spirituality called the unitive way was often described as non-dual consciousness by Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism. Are we often seeking the same thing? How can we honor and respect each of these spiritual traditions?

Thank you so much for speaking truth to my heart. I have struggled with the fundamentalist evangelical way of interpreting the bible. It just didn’t square up but I now feel such a freedom to love and not judge. Now I see God in everyone and everything. Just started reading Eager to Love and have read Falling Upwards. Bless you.

God bless Fr. Rohr. He speaks a truth that resonates so deeply with me, that divinity resides within us and that practices - meditation, contemplation, etc. - help us find that on ourselves.

What you are determines what you are capable of seeing.

For me this is the beginning of the spiritual path.

If only I could convince members of Church in and around here of this Reality. I thought Buddhism at first before Enlightenment until I found there is something beyond or 'outside' of Enlightenment that encompasses Buddhist thought, and the answer is contained in Christ.

Very impressive and helpful. He has done so much for the contemplative prayer or centering prayer movement... The Christian form of meditation.

Much of Christianity is still a religion under the law oblivious to the simple message of love that Yeshua brought. Thanks Fr. Rohr for speaking from the heart and the mind of Christ.

It is the Enlightenment that makes us One.

Right on target, brilliant and to the point! There are a few Saints who apparently spontaneously entered into the non dual state of Pure Awareness (like St John of the Cross)., but there was no distinct, clear exposition from commentators on the nature of that Realization. They just used terms such as "Ecstasy, or Mystical Union" and left it at that. However, Aquinas made an attempt to reconcile Platonic Idealism (essentially what we might call Enlightenment today) with the more traditional dualist notion of the Trinity. His attempt largely failed, falling out of favor within a few centuries.

How to experience God instead of obseeving God, is the big question.

It's not in John 5.14 but in Matthew 5.14

Good video Father Rohr. If anybody here is a Buddhist skeptic, I have a Buddhism series on my channel talking about Jesus Christ similarities with Buddhism and the healing power of God through Jesus Christ🙏

Short and insightful for some. I like what he says as it shows the individual relationship with the God and the individual rather than mediated by an institution or ritual.
Also, many Catholics do not want freedom--too much repsponsibility and therefore, live in quiet misery awaiting the Kingdom of God after death. Jesus DID NOT teach this.

What's he talking about? God _is_ absolute, the highly exalted absolute. We don't look at Him being like that b/c we want to create wars, but b/c He _is_ like that.
