How Do We Make Social Media Safe?

Facebook Whistleblower Frances Haugen and Tristan Harris, President and co-founder of Center for Humane Technology, discuss the ongoing ability for people inside and outside technology companies to participate in shaping the space that is shaping them. The Facebook Files — a collection of stories published at the Wall Street Journal based on hundreds of pages of leaked documents from inside Facebook — is one of the greatest exposés of Big Tech yet produced. Over the course of its investigative journalism, it details the internal machinations of Facebook, the company’s awareness of how its business model contributes to user harms, and its decisions to do nothing. This is a recording of an event hosted only by Yale ISP on Oct. 7, 2021.

It really makes me sad that more people aren’t actively searching this information. I really really want to connect with Tristan so I can be apart of this movement and help spread awareness using my platform

It’s not about being safe! It needs to be open, transparent and not designed to be predatory. This framing of making it “safe” is almost as concerning as the censorship. There can be safe areas but never a totally safe “internet”

Yes by all means, let's make the world safe. But life is not safe, is it? No matter what, danger never recedes completely. If you want safety from life, cut down on the amount of actual living you do, and good luck. The precautionary principle is destroying resilient culture as well as social media.
