Is your car expensive to maintain?

Would you like to see you name in the credits?

“If its too expensive for a swiss person, then what chance could you possibly have”
As a swiss person this made me chuckle

The Phaeton was a 4x4 luxury train, but if you buy it with a 3.0L diesel (which is a bit sluggish, but still good on power and fuel economy) it will be much cheaper to maintain (at least here in Europe). Me and my brother both had one each for under 7000$ and they were great. My brother actually toured around Europe in one summer, and it was the best cars for the task. After selling them, we realized it was that kind of car that when you own one, it feels expensive, but when you sell it, you instantly regret it and other cars don't satisfy you the same

I own an RX8 - yes they do have their issues, they just need to be looked after properly. I know people who have kept theirs going far beyond 100k miles. You'll only ruin an engine after 30k miles if you don't let it bed in properly.

The good thing about owning one of these cars is that you do not get the Spam calls asking you to purchase an extended warranty for your car

RX8s’ wankel/rotary engines are less reliable than similar-power piston engines, but the majority of problems are caused by neglect through not keeping oil topped up or switching the engines off cold (the required deflooding risking scoring). The rear bearings of S1 cars do fail, but using heavier oil helps substantially. Most of the issues can be avoided for a long time by getting a compression test done before purchase (too many unscrupulous sellers lie to get rid of a damaged car!), checking ignition coils and regular oil level checks (I’ve had many piston cars that drink oil faster). The cars are so cheap now that you can throw one away and lose little (but insist on a comp test before buying and get new coils). Did I say get a comp test done and get new coils? I’ve done over 100, 000 miles in RX8s with no engine problems whatsoever.

My dad has had a Land Rover Discovery 2 since 2012. It has had some issues, like ABS, TC and HDC warning lights going off for no reason at all (one time the ABS warning light went off, and my dad had to brake on the snow; the ABS was working very well!), and a minor leak from the steering assist. We tried many times to get them fixed, but after the 6th time we undestood it wasn't worth it. Now it makes a weird screetch sound when you accelerate too hard (I think it's the engine belt). It never left us on foot though, unlike a Range Rover Sport from 2010 that we bought in 2020. That one left us in the middle of nowhere because apparently there was metal in the fuel tank, the ECU detected it and it instantly shut off the engine. We did fill up the car at a very sus looking gas pump though. Bought it for €10.000, €3000 to fix the damage. Didn't do anything weird after that.

Update: It died again

I am the original owner of a 2009 Maserati Gran Turismo 4.2 - other than regular maintenance I had to replace a coolant hose that failed and the battery twice. It is extremely fun to drive. I guess some people are lucky.

The bmw e60 m5 has some reliability issues which can be fix before it breaks such as rod bearing, gearbox etc... The automotive culture kinda implified the unreability of this car and now they are at the bottom of their value. If u have enough money to maintain them, then go for it, but don't expect them to have a "lexus reliability" and maintain cost, just take care of the car (waiting it for being warm, changing oil etc...). And imo the car will go up in value because cauz it has a freakin v10 (in a "regular sedan") straight out of competition and an AMAZING sound and performance.

RE: the BMW, first thing you do is get the rod bearings checked, if they're down to copper, replace them IMMEDIATELY. There are aftermarket replacements which use a stronger material and wont wear down. Usually this costs a couple of grand to do but it will save the car and as long as you keep it maintained regularly, youll be ok

If you want to take a trip into the Sahara Desert take a Range Rover, if you want to return take a Toyota.

Sadly a luxury car from 20 years ago will still cost luxury prices to fix😂

Rx8 original owner 130k miles. Replaced plugs wires and coills, water pump and belts, several cabin oil and intake filters, brakes and rotors. Overflow bottle, both door locks, aircontrol solenoids, clutch pedal, emissions fan. Total repair and maintenance about £4, 000. Did most of the work myself. I have to keep the car and sell my much newer bmw n20 motor car due to the reliability. Bmw has lost oil cooler gasket and timing covers gaskets. Timing chains likely to fail soon. Rx8 has been more reasonable to fix.

Ian did an amazing job. Your voice has built a sense of irony into itself over time but I'm surprised how well Ian did. 👏🏻👏🏻

I’m no shop tech but I’m pretty knowledgeable. I’ve always liked the idea of buying a non running RX8 and rebuilding it.

Will Stype be back Ian? Would love to see both of you in the videos. Good job on your first video Ian.
