It's incredible how cars depreciate in the UK. Here in Portugal the cars are expensive when new and expensive when used. If I lived there I could buy 1 almost new used car for a bargain and sell it every year. It could be a hobby. XD

Bought used kia ceed sw tech 4 1.6 crdi 13 reg with 50k on clock. Done 20k in one year, just rear camera stopped working which I don't need. Engine sounds smooth as I bought it.
When I say that I own a kia every one starts laughing and say thats a shitty car but most of them change their minds when I give them a ride and say them how much mileage I've done.

I own a Kia Cee’d SW CRDI-13, bought it used with 96000km, now 156000km owned it since 2017 and had it inspected with clean papers since I bought it, replaced brakediscs and pads on it and serviced it twice, also had the glow plugs replaced and a new battery since it was a bit hard when starting it cold.
It’s a good reliable car and you got pretty much everything you need, I just wish it was better insulated for lower road noise...

The problem with "Premium bargains" is that their maintenance costs left premium all the time and you should calculate additional at least 1/3 of the car's price for nasty surprises :(
changing "premium gearbox" will cost you as much as a new super mini the engine works is twice...

O.K. How about an American point of view. I'm a retired automechanic (due to several injuries that necessitates me to walk with a cane) now selling auto parts and handing out repair advice. I don't know how Europeans are about auto maintenance but all Americans seem to know is stick the key in and turn it! Btw I think I'm 1 of 13 Americans who can drive stick! To me buying a 3 year old car is risky. Most people know they're going to keep it 3 years so they neglect service. I've seen 3 year old engines with as little as 40, 000 miles that are piles of sludge! My practice has been to buy new a be fastidious about maintenance. My 1999 Hyundai Accent (stick shift) still runs like a sewing machine at 170, 000 miles. Same with my 2013 Hyundai Sonata (i45) with 92, 000 miles that I use for business. That's my 2 cents. Thoughts?

Where on earth did the Panda 4x4 depreciation figures come from? The cheapest one on auto-trader is 8K. so it's residual is 60%, not 30%.

I always thought cars that depreciate the most do so because they are not that good. If they were that good, dealers would have a long queue of buyers ready to snap their hand off for one, at a much higher price.
In the end you get what you pay for.
