Pre-Germinate Grass Seed Without The Mess

This was the simple way I pre-germinated buffalograss seed this Spring to grow a new lawn space easily, quickly, and consistently even in a seedbed that was a little too cold for a warm season grass.

I have pre-germinated cool season grass seed in buckets using the cheesecloth steeping method and found it to be very messy and wasteful since so much of the seed rooted into the cloth.

The method that I featured in this video seemed much cleaner and I wasted virtually none of the seed.

I do landscaping work and i offer this. I submerge TTF and Kentucky blue grass mix in water for 12 hours change water and submerge for a other 12 hours. then after that its out of the bucket for 6 - 9 days of just watering the bag with the hose out side. I make sure to flip the bag and mix the seed around its never failed on me and had great results.

This is the BEST pre-germinating video on YouTube!!! No one else talks about the need of oxygen!!!!

And your warm season seeds look soo different than cool season seeds!!!

I usually do 2 batches. A small one, and a big batch 2 days later.

When I see the first batch sprouting, I KNOW the big batch is 2 days away, instead of just guessing. So I can throw down the big batch just before germination.

I have much worse results if I spread it after germination, as the damage I do to it is much greater, so I prefer doing it before.

This is very much like the method for sprouting seeds to eat which is often done on the kitchen counter in a smaller vessel. One difference is that I rinse the seeds twice a day and need to be aware of the heat that is generated by the seeds. They can get too warm without a rinse. Thanks for the info!

You got me thinking about the oxygen thing. I'm going to put my bubbler that I use to keep my minnows alive for fishing in my bucket while soaking my seed. Great video. You did a lot of work producing it and it shows. Liked and subbed.

Thanks for clarifying that seed needs oxygen.

People on YouTube kept saying to keep seed submerged, but every time I tried it failed. Once I stopped submerging seed it worked

I wish I did this method last year with my blue grass... Being able to keep an eye on it the whole time pre-germinating would have put me weeks further ahead. I did the 4-5 day paint/ bucket water change out.... Didn't seem like it saved me any time...Well done!

That looks like a great method to pre-germinate your grass seed, but how would you do like 100lbs of grass seed if you were seeding a large area?

Always like your take on things, I've seen several videos on pre germinating and tried it once myself but nice additions for me here as well. What I found to be challenging was the clumping of the seed, I saw you used a nice dry sand, I had a soil that was not as dry. You're also kind of pushed when the germinating happens (if you're waiting for it), you need to be ready! Also as a cold season grass-man that seed looks very strange!

Thank you for sharing this video. I tried pre-germinating KBG but the worst part was clumping of seeds. I saw you used sand, what else do you recommend to mix with the seed so it spreads nicely using a Scott’s drop spreader?

If you pregerminate for a reno or overseed, can you use mesotrione? Does it matter if it starts to shoot out roots already?

Brian I can only imagine your wife's face w all this "experimentation" in the kitchen.😂😂
Kudos for your dedication!!!
I tried pregerminating Fescue last year and it didn't go well.
NEVER AGAIN!!!🔥🔥
I'd rather just schedule 7-14 days at home (ish) to keep watering the lawn.
Less Stress.
Great video as always.

Another great video, Brian! FYI, I had excellent results about a month ago (mid-April) here in New Jersey spot-seeding with tall fescue following a previous video of yours on pre-germinating with warm water. The tall fescue came in strong in probably half the time it would have normally taken.

I now have another bare spot (about two square feet) that's cropped up after I got a little overzealous in applying herbicide to kill off some clover. My question: is it now too late to seed the spot with more tall fescue given the much warmer temperatures here in late May? Should I wait until the fall, or is it worth reseeding now using the pre-seeding technique in this video?

So do you use sand or peat moss? And when you were mixing it by and, you couldn't see a single seed. And what is the ratio of peat moss to seed?

I tried the method of submerging the seeds for several days and there has been no germination (now day 7) while the normal way I got germination in 8 days. Also my tap water was pretty cold probably. So this batch is probably a bust. Just started a new batch with the learnings from this video.
