Preparing the lawn for an overseed is a must. Here are my 5 preparation tips.
1. fix your sprinkler coverage. water comes first. if you don't have proper watering the seed will either not germinate in some areas or it may wash away.

2. Mow low. scalp mow the lawn down to 1". It's recommended not to mow for 3 weeks after you seed the lawn. scalping the lawn down to 1" will allow the grass to grow and find the sun.

3. Dethatch the lawn. I personally love using the sun joe dethatcher for this purpose. removing the lawn debris helps seed to soil contact.

4. start treating weeds minimum 1 month in advance. this will help the eliminate weeds during the seeding process

5. use a selective pre emergent like tenacity to grow your grass seed. using tenacity will help stop weed seed germination and allow your grass seed to grow and thrive.

Thanks for tuning in! I specialize in solving lawn problems and implementing strategies to fix lawn problems. Weather you have crabgrass that's not dying, too much thatch, lawn fungus, over watering problems or an ugly lawn there's not a lawn problem I can't solve. A very good summary. I redid my 8000 sq ft lawn (eastern Washington) last summer, huge job. Seeded and turned on water. I was mowing in 3 weeks and it looks amazing. Just seeded neighbors lawn a week ago, way too late, nothing coming up yet and we are getting into 30s at night so it will be interesting to see how well it does over the winter. Thanks for the great video.

This year I had the greatest lawn and did over seeding in the fall. Working remote and from home gave me the ability to do exactly as you say. I over seeded in late August and had fantastic results. I watched every video on your channel this year and your advice was so valuable. My lawn in the cool fall looks like a plush green carpet.

Thanks for the tips, in this video and the others.
I have been doing the lawn prep for fall, and now I have snow! My grass is dark green, short, and tidy. Should be ready for spring.
Lawn went from weed-heaven to best lawn in a 3 block radius in a few months, thanks to the info from this channel. ✌️

A big thanks from the other side of the Atlantic!!
My lawn was in horrible shape in the spring/early summer this year..it was only one year old but was full of crabgrass and just week overall (very thin..).
It was watching your videos that I learned how to bring it back from the dead..
Its now (said by the neighbors) the best lawn they see in this town..
It took A LOT of work but it paid of realy nice.
Its just unfortunate that most of the herbicides that you mention are not available here..
Once again, thanks for the knowledge that you shared!

This video was fantastic! I am so stoked for next year’s improvement! I haven’t been able to find why you like Sun Joe over the Greenworks. Both of your videos about them seemed positive.

Great video. I've commented on so many negative posts for the Zenith Zoysia seller site where people are blaming the grass seed as being bad when we know 99% of it was improper watering or other user error. One guy went so far as to say he screened all the top soil he put down over the soil he prepped using 1/4 inch mesh, but yet you still see plenty of rocks and twigs throughout. I put down 5, 000 sq. ft. of Zoysia seed later in the season than I should have and still the only issue I had with germination was where I thought the cheap sprinklers would last through germination, but one failed, and I replaced it with another and it failed so needless to say that seed bed dried out and 90% of the seed didn't survive, but the rest of the lawn did great. People blame all the weeds that pop up on weed filled grass seed, which after your Bahrenburg trip video, that is very rare. And even if you do have a little weed seed in the grass seed you buy, it won't matter because you still need to kill the weeds that germinated from your soil. Animals carry weed seed to your lawn, wind will too, as well as birds eating weed seed then pooping the seeds out in your lawn. I think the best way to avoid weed seeds is to remove the top 2 inches of soil using a SOD cutter. That worked great for me and gave me room to level my lawn while bringing it back up a little without messing with the original grade of my lawn, but that's too much work to do otherwise. I don't care how young or old you are, shoveling that much top soil is back breaking...thankfully I found someone that had a small farm tractor that picked the soil up for free in trade for the soil. :0) I may share this link the next time I see people complaining that they are perfect and the seed failed. :0)

Sunjoe dethatcher has been a life saver. Cord is a pain but it sure does make for quicker work vs that old rake that just sits in the garage now.

I used prodiamine this season at a half rate so I could overseed in the fall. It worked wonderfully for the spring/early summer weed suppression, and I still successfully overseeded in Sept.

I'd throw in one more suggestion. If you're (over)seeding in a lawn with a lot of trees, you might be better off doing your seeding in the early spring instead of the fall. You'll have to put in a little more work in terms of watering, and you might have to top-dress it with peat moss to keep the spring storms from washing the seed away, but the big advantage is getting some significant sun to the freshly germinated seedling before the trees fill in. I kept trying to seed in the fall and had bad results in several places and the common denominator was they were all shady places. Did a spring seeding, and had much better success.

I used tenacity for the first time with my seed this year. I agree, my fescue turned white in some areas but it only lasted about a week. The thing I didn't know was that the grass germinating could also come up white! At first I thought I had a fungus problem, but after about a week it two turned back to green

There was a power outage and I forgot to reset my sprinklers. This was about 10 days into overseeding. Nothing seemed to grow. It makes sense though. It got no water for 1 day and dried out. This was in Late May. Did not know that was so crucial. Another great video keep it up!
