Pregnancy may be tough in any era, but giving birth in Ancient Egypt was certainly no picnic on the Nile. With infant mortality rates of up to 50% and little protection for mothers from labor complications, the Ancient Egyptians enlisted a combination of practical tools and cultural mysticism throughout pregnancy and childbirth. Today on Nutty History, we’re looking at what pregnancy was like in Ancient Egypt. Before we can bring you the fruits of our labor, be sure to subscribe to our channel and let us know in the comments what nutty history you’d like to hear about next.

So tell us would you want to live in ancient Egypt where Crocodile dung was a norm?

I'm pregnant now and have had 5 hospitalisations in the last 12 weeks for severe sickness. I'm 17 weeks and still struggling so how they got through it back then is beyond me.

They almost got it right with the dates actually! Eating dates helps soften the cervix (many women eat dates to prepare for labor). A softer, more open cervix helps sperm travel to the uterus.

An Asian woman gave me a nursing remedy. That at first I thought wasa bit crazy. Not only did it work. It worked better than medical ointment. I breastfed my daughter. After awhile you'll suffer from drying & cracking. It's quite painful. The ointment at the pharmacy wasn't helping. This older lady said to; dampen a tea bag & place it on the area to treat. I did this after every feeding. It healed me much faster than western medicinal product. I tell every nursing woman this nursing tip.

Birthing chair always make sense to me, gravity and pushing seems easier in a chair. Laying flat just is strange delivery method.

i really enjoyed the narrator's light delivery. so to speak.
nothing wrong with the usual male's way of dishing out facts, but i was glad to hear another voice.

Subscribed! Great content… it’s good to know that Egyptian pregnant women were more respected than in Europe. I would love to know about Asia, maybe China or Japan

I just know the women back then had some horrible yeast infections

With my first pregnancy, I didn't look it until 8 months along. We discovered that due to my fibromyalgia, my muscles would cramp and get in the way of labor progression. Epidural removed that issue and my labors were fairly short.
I had 3 children

Wow. People really don't understand much about women's bodies even now, according to these comments. Love the narrator's voice. Great content 👌 👏

Your "village" helping you through labor is how it should be, knowledge passed on to generations and women learning what really goes on, rather than women now (me) weren't ever really educated on birth until going to my own birthing classes.

I love Egyptian history with all of my heart guys, it's simply so wonderful to know that our ancestors struggled with so much things that today we just see as a normal thing like: childbirth

I love hearing about the ancient Egyptians. They were able to come up with ideas in engineering and medical practices that was years ahead of their time.

We owe this civilization of debt of gratitude for discovering so much so early and going through that trial and error process.

This was really interesting! I was surprised to hear that most women in Ancient Egypt were illiterate - I had the impression that women's position in Egyptian society was not that far below men's. But then, I have no idea how many men were literate in Ancient Egypt either.
5:55 - Oh, Great Bast, I am in labor. Curl up next to me and purr, comfortingly, I beg!
