Why did I flood this hole?

I went into the chicken coop with this water can and wanted to flood out this hole to see if there were any mice or rats that were still in there. After pouring the water in there was nothing coming out, so I started digging and tried to get to the bottom of this hole to see what was living in it, I kept digging and flooding but nothing came out.

Did that one day and I had holes like that all over my yard, I used a garden hose and tons of mice came flying out and the chickens were snatching them up, it was a massacre

Find the other hole. All rodents have an exit strategy, and in particular rats will dig a flood chamber so any pinkies won't drown in case of flood... Find the other hole there might be more than one, block everything you can find, usually blowing smoke into the 'main' hole will expose the rest of their exits

My Great Grandmother did this one time in her front yard. She felt horrible once we pulled the baby rabbits that were in there out and nursed them back to health before setting them free. She didn’t hurt the babies but I’m sure she never did that again.

Worst varmin we had were three skunks that moved into the barn during the winter. Lived under a cement slab and ate cat food at night. Took a bit to get rid of them

Chickens had already dealt with whatever made the hole.

Those mice are smart, in my chicken coop they have a whole underground system with multiple exits and ways for the water to either stop flooding the tunnels or drain out of them before it flooded their entire system.

My grandfather saw what he thought was a rat hole. He told grandma to boil a large pot of water. 20 minutes later, he poured the whole thing into the hole. A minute later 3 hairless rats ran out twitching and screaming. They all died. Grandma felt bad and grandpa just fed them to a neighbor’s cats.

I started flooding a hole similar. I pumped in about 125 gallon water and gave up fearing of landslide.
Nothing came out.
The holes multiplied by time, i guess rats are just too comfortable.

Another way you can tell us if the holes active or not is take some small sticks and leaves and stuff or even a couple small rocks and cream inside the hole anywhere from a couple hours later to the next day if the holes clear again means it’s being used

My step grandpa has a trick
Grab a garden hose shove it into the exhaust pipe of your car put the other end of the hose into the hole
And then wait there for a few minutes while you run it
Bypass’s any flood insurance that the mice set up
