How a Woman Who Lost 200 Pounds Will Lose Even More

At her heaviest, Athena Perez weighed 450 lb. Today, she’s lost more than 200 lb. and recently completed the CrossFit Level 1 Certificate Course at the historic Ranch in Aromas, California.
Perez, 41, shared her astonishing story in the CrossFit Journal earlier this year, explaining how food was used “as a weapon” in her home when she was growing up.
Starting CrossFit wasn’t easy for Perez, who couldn’t go up stairs at one point, but she’s now all in. Even though she's lost more than 200 lb., Perez knows she can accomplish even more by taking additional steps to dial in her nutrition.
After hearing Level 1 Seminar Staff member Zac Pine lecture on nutrition, Perez has an epiphany: “Fruit and nuts are the first things ... I need to cut down on for sure,” she says.
Sinch she started adhering to the Zone Diet after the seminar, Perez has seen changes in her body composition, but she’s setting small, manageable goals that will create impressive results.
“I don’t think so much about how far I have to go,” she says. “I’m only focusing on the 5 pounds that I’m working on right now.”
