Well my sincere apologies to the cube for assuming nobody would care about you. The comments have proven that lots of people felt the bond to you and I guess I’m just heartless (and proud). Can’t deny though that this fight is basically your fault for not even attempting to step off of the conveyer belt when clearly you had al occasion to do so 😤😤😤😤

OLD Description
Here you fight your brainwashed friend who you are supposed to care about but in reality there wasn't enough character development to really feel anything and you are just here for fun.

The worst thing is that during the fight you can see the square try to stuggle

I like the hidden wordplay in this battle. Cubes attacks mostly revolve around the environment rather than direct attacks, and they tend to attack around the edges of the screen, forcing you to stay “Close to him”.

I think the most extreme feeling of helplessness in this game is when Friend is crawling away from the saws and you can't help him.

In general, the phrase "Close to Me" in the JSaB universe can have several meanings.
1. It is used by corruption to lure the player closer to their already infected Friend (and infect the player themselves, of course).
2. The player is still, well, *close* and dear to a Friend, and he tries his best not to succumb to corruption (you can see by the sections before the laser that occur after each attack, as well as by the scene where you can't help him in any way) and the phrase "Close to Me" is a cry for help.
3. Well, a play on words, where at the level you literally have to stay "close" to Friend in order to avoid attacks, also matters.
tbh, this cute lil guy is much stronger than he seems, he is the only boss that literally restored his body from corruption in the end of battle (triangle just made the work ultimately done), unlike every freaking boss. and also - not everyone will be able to use their cat ears as a DEFIBRILLATOR, DAMN it-

didn't think that a game about simple geometric shapes would make me cry.

I know absolutely nothing about this game. Not a single thing.
Somehow, this video was recommended to me. Why? I don't know.
But I decided to watch it, and now I feel sad.

Understanding that the Sad Square has some sort of connection with the small square that you play as before going into this boss fight is what you might need. It's a small tale of a friend, a close friend, becoming corrupted and forcing you to face off against them in order to save them. Be happy that you saved them in the end and didn't have to kill them, like other games....

I love and hate the fact that you can see the cube struggling against the corruption this shows that he Really doesn’t want to hurt you. And I love the fact that you can actually see the struggle he’s going through. It’s great for a game like this!

This level and the cube is a good allegory for how difficult it is to reach out, and how hard it can be to watch someone close to you start to decline. sometimes it's hard not to hurt people by accident when you are so sad and angry at the state of things. Sometimes it's hard to express your feelings without being harsh or wanting to run away from them.

The fact that this boss is more popular than the final boss.

I remember showing this game to a kid I met at programming camp. We both watched the factory cutscene before Cube got corrupted, and may I just say we both were just going "NO NO NO NO NO" before it happened. This. Moment. Was. HEAVY.

I adore this fight
1. The name is a very smart one as it works with the optimal way to beat this level
2. The fact that this is a major turning point in the plot is unique and sad, which works good with the message of never giving up seen throughout the game
3. The music

I feel like there was more effort put into this boss than Annihilate.
So, most of the attacks revolve around the edges of the screen. Implying that, you want to be close to him. Like the song name.

And then there's the laser part, where he reaches out for you, because you're too far.
But then he gets zapped, implying the demon doesn't you to be close to him.

This amount of effort also shows how, losing a friend is super tough. As well as the difficulty. I'd say it's harder than Annihilate.

The final attack also implies to get even closer than before, and eventually it spins so fast you have to dash.
Like you'd dash to help your friend. And also, since you're closer to the cube, it's like, again, losing a friend. You miss them more and more.

So much effort was put into this battle. JS&B had a lot of thought put into it. Take it from not one battle, but the game itself.

Fact:
The square’s name is “Friend”
While the corrupt version is named “fiend”

2:58 personally this final stretch of the song to me is so emotional and hits hard it's like the cube adds another layer of music and it almost sounds like crying to let the suffering end and begging for help

If this is what happened when the Square got corrupted, what would happen to the Pirate Ship or the Helicopter if they were corrupted
