“How inbred was Charles II?”
“How round is a sphere?”
“Perfectly”
“Exactly”

I like how their hired painters didn’t even try to make him look better.

Gosh can you imagine being a young lady in this family. Your parents come to you one day and say” you know your uncle you saw him at your birthday a few months ago….you two are getting married”.

They did actually have a concept of inbreeding. They understood that the closer the degree of relation, the more likely deformities were to occur. They just didn't consider that as important as keeping the royal blood free of low-class blood. They called it the Habsburg jaw for a reason. Even Marie Antoinette had a mild form of it.

I saw this mans geneology. It is a mess. 8 (!) married couples of his ancestors were related to each other. I'm glad we know much more now of the risks of inbreeding. The Habsburgs basically prove that greediness is unhealthy.

I really don't think people should make fun of an inbred child. It's not the child's fault. It's only the child's fault if when they grow up they marry a relative, and have another child who is now inbred.

I've read that he would have been less inbred if his parents had been brother and sister! I mean, look at him! How was it not obvious what was happening?

Awesome video! Just one correction, the highest coefficient of inbreeding was unfortunately held by the niece of Charles II and the daughter of his full sisters Margaret Theresa. Margaret Theresa, already the product of an uncle and niece, married her uncle Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I. They had one daughter who survived to adulthood, Archduchess Maria Antonia Josepha. Her coefficient of inbreeding is 0.3053.

Two things that factored in a Hapsburg bride: A.She must be cousin or niece to the groom. B. Papal dispensation because, well, incest. Forget hillbillies. European royals pretty much cornered the market on inbreeding.

It is said Charles died 200 years before he was born

Charles II was, essentially, cursed as his nickname, El hechizado (the bewitched), had it but it was his family that condemned him to such a miserable life with so much pain.

Poor guy...it was bad enough what he had to go through in his daily life (I mean he didn't choose to be born this way) but to continue to be the most iconic example of just what can go wrong with inbreeding even centuries later... :(

His father is also his great-uncle and his mother is also his first cousin... Oh God

“Very” made me laugh way too loudly in a quiet room. I scared my dogs, but not as much as they’d have been scared by King Bottom Lip. I hit “subscribe” with a *quickness*.

To quote Oversimplified's Henry VIII video: Mummy says it's a strong chin for a strong boy!

The Austrian Hapsburgs later on made many bad decisions that led to their collapse in 1918 so this mightve been a reason for their demise too. The present ones seem a lot more " together" though.
