Thoughts On A Fallout Remake

I talk about how I would remake Fallout today...including defining what I mean by "remake".

Thanks Tim. I remember either writing up a suggestion or talking to Chris about how Intelligence was too important for making a decent character. I thought the SPECIAL values should affect them in some way so you could make a strong idiot and be still able to pump up Unarmed/Melee.

You ended up giving Dennis Presnel and myself an additional design credit in the game (manuals had already been printed months earlier), I think primarily because when we wrote up feedback, we also provided suggestions. I was so irritated by the original HP gain per level being only if you had enough Endurance, you needed 4 to get 1hp. I nagged Chris and you to make it a base gain per level with an additional amount based on half your endurance, and I think that's what went in. Jason also had me write some dialog for the BOS and a few generic responses that I think were in the Hub.

It's still the thing I'm most proud of being part of.

Honestly i have to agree, if you change fallout 1&2 too much theyll lose a lot of what made them great originally

I was about to dislike the respawning idea, but what you actually described, this repopulation, is a great idea. I love it.

I think a Wasteland 2-style remake of the first Fallout would be incredible. Like you said, leave it completely as is, but add some new bells and whistles like voicing all NPCs (not even necessary) and overhauling the UI.

This is the kind of remake I like, respectful with the original material. I would personally change character movement so that you can move straight up or straight down, it always bothered me the way characters would zig-zag in the game.

Sounds like 75% remaster 25% remake. Uprezzed, enhanced, expanded. I need it!

That would be the dream! I just finished Fallout 1 last week for the first time and I loved the darker atmosphere, somehow it is something that has changed with the most recent ones. Greetings from Italy supporters!

Ever since finding your video essays being used (with credits to you, and a good minute long ode about how integral you are/were to the games industry and a link to your page) in another Youtuber's video about their love for the Fallout series, I am FREAKING THRILLED that you upload almost every single day! I'm 31 years old, and grew up with many titles you've had a hand in working on! It's an absolute goldmine for someone like me, who has maybe become jaded with the industry (as a consumer) at the same time that uh, GROWING UP and the paces of life started happening. I love hearing your takes, your stories, your interviews with people you've worked with, and there's something new every single day! Thanks for some of the best memories growing up. I'll never forget convincing the Master (of the SuperMutants) to kill themselves in FO1, or doing an entire FO2 playthrough as a freaking NEANDERTHAL (1 INT) with BRUTE STRENGTH. Oh my God, those dialogue choices, and the NPC's that would make fun of you for being dumber than a brick.

"Me no.. like you"
"Geez, buddy, I've had better conversations with scrap metal"

When I was 14 my homies were playing World of Warcraft... I was playing Baulder's Gate 2 for the 10th time and taking hand-written notes in a spiral notebook about NPC's and item locations xD Some people are just into different things. I still can't talk about TES or Fallout Series around my friends, I can never stop myself from lore-dumping and asking them if they "made sure to look into EVERY single option in the questline." And I get so upset when they shrug and go "Oh nah, I killed everyone, "

I recently in the past year played through Fallout 1 and I gotta say man it was one of the most amazing experiences in gaming I've ever had. There were a few bumps here and there to work past, but for the time it was created and what it is, FO1 is nearly a masterpiece. I think a proper remaster/remake would make the title ascend to a true masterpiece. Your team killed it and thanks for making that great game. I still listen to the Shady Sands song regularly, Godlike sound design.

I have a few specific questions:
- would you show players the requirements / success chance of checks?
- would you make the game 3D or sprite-based?
- would you allow players to control their companions in combat?
- Would you bring companions more in line with the expectations of modern games (E.g affinity system, quests, more reactivity)?

Thank you for doing these sir. I thought I knew you a bit from the game, Ilike to see the bits the devs leave, that sounds weird but I love figuring out the influence and then seeing if I am correct. Listening to you talk about this game is so soothing. I have spent a good chunk of my life playing them. I adore them. I am grateful you all made them and they saved my life. I'm autistic and was bullied, like every other nerd I ain't special, but I found solace in these discordant worlds you created. They sing with life and death. I still play them. I have already started teaching my grandson how to play the OG titles. He is very big on early gaming era content. He's six and he wants to start at the beginning and it's just super cool to be able to show him these videos you have made and for that I thank you again! Cheers good sir Knight!

One thing I absolutely love when hearing you talk about Fallout, THE PASSION you clearly still have for it! I feel like that's something that is sorely missing with today's developers. It's presented more-so as just a product so shareholders can get their return and less so about the passion behind the idea/concept they're cooking.

Base-building has no place in the Lone Wanderer types of stories in the early Fallouts.

I like the idea of perks that reduce random encounters, it is a positive perk to some players, like those wanting a more focused adventure. It sounds like something a DM would use in tabletop play.

I have been hoping and praying for InXile to be given the rights to remake Fallout 1 & 2, i think they’d do a fantastic job. these games right at the top of my dream remake list and i wanna see it done so bad

I think the gold standard when it comes to remakes the original Resident Evil remake takes the first place.

Shinji Mikami stated his goal was to implement the ideas he could not back then due to resources/tech. He brought better graphics, voice acting, script and he added all plot stuff he had to cut. He left the core gameplay practically untouched, except for the crimson head mechanic that added a layer of complexity to the game.

The result was an incredible game that is in every single way superior to the original.

Tim, thank you for making Fallout. I had such a blast playing it when you published it, and it ranks as one of the games that warms my heart. :) If you ever decide to remake it, I'll happily purchase it!

TBH I did not know who you were when I stumbled upon your videos. When I learned you did Fallout I got really interested. Now I learned you also made Arcanum. That go me :) I played Arcanum several times with some unfinished attempts crashing in the middle of the game but still I played it again. Just wonderful game. Never played Masquerade, played TOEE only twice :) and Fallout... a lot of times. All I can say is thank you for all the entertainment and fun I had with these masterpieces. My gratitude and appreciation for all you have done Tim.
