There's a reason the saying "no good deed goes unpunished" exists. Government thinks anything and everything of value belongs to it.

I dunno about the rest of EU, but GB has very specific laws about historical items dug up or found anywhere. It is the property of the govt, period. The law also provides a cash finders fee in the equivalent value of the "treasure trove", which this finder split with the landowner - whose hammer he was looking for lol.

You can also include the country of Colombia. If you find a barrel of money you must turn it over to the government. It is assumed that it belonged to Pablo Escobar. A farmer found several barrels of money and the Colombian military showed up.

I had a hammer like that once. It was hand forged. That was probably why they went to such effort to find it.

Must have been a very good friend to go looking for his friend's lost hammer 😂😂

See how times are different?

70 years ago, almost all in the UK would have called the "authorities".

Now, almost all would keep it for themselves.

The Hoxne hoard is on display in the British museum. It's the largest collection of roman coins found within the roman Empire.

This is exactly where it should be for the public to view free of charge.

To say melt it down is absolutely sacrilege.

It's well known that in Britain, any historical find is paid for by the state and studied, then displayed for all to enjoy and learn from.
