We will start optimization problems with some basic questions like fencing in a field (or it could be a swimming area or a fenced in yard); The famous "open topped box" question and the minimizing surface area for a golf practice area.

Thank you for all that you are doing Ms. Havrot, i am truly grateful as i don't learn well in class and rely mostly on these online videos and so far you have done nothing but help to clear the fog in my head!

For the math-curious, you could ask yourself, if the first question REQUIRES a rectangular area. If so, then it is solved as shown. If you are told that you have that 120m of wire and need three straight fences which make a quadrilateral when joined to the barn, then you can get more area out of that much wire. Ask yourself what four-sided shape will maximize that area and why that is. If you don't have to use straight fences, is there a curve that you can use to get an ultimate maximum area with a straight barn side and 120m of wire? This isn't a calculus question so much as a geometry question, but it's fun if you want to dive a little deeper.

At 22:06 why does 432x^-1 become -432/x^2? Shouldn't it become -432/x I don't understand how it becomes x^2

4:26 why do you find the derivative and equal to zero? I know its to kind the min or max but the min or max of what exactly?

Hey Ms. Havrot, Hope you are having a great day so far! I was just wondering for the last question, why wouldn't the dimensions for the volume be 4*6*6 (since that equals 144m^3). I don't understand why it is 4*4*6 (since that equals 96 m^3)

Last questions the dimensions should actually be 6x6x4
