Best Reciprocating Saw | Sawzall v DeWalt FlexVolt v Makita

We’ve been eagerly waiting to unveil the PTR Test Track and the day is finally here! Helping us set the first benchmarks, we have the top saws from DeWalt, Makita, and Milwaukee. From DeWalt we have the DCS389, or the second gen Flexvolt reciprocating saw. Makita brings to the table their XRJ06, a 36V reciprocating saw that runs on their X2 platform. Finally, Milwaukee brings its M18 Fuel Super Sawzall to the table, the 2722-20. The Test Track is made up of three components. We’ll start with 2-inch cast iron pipe before moving over to a double stud with 4 nails embedded in it. Wrapping it all up, our final test is the roofing sandwich made of asphalt shingles, galvanized flashing, tar, peel and stick underlayment, ½-inch OSB, and 2x10 yellow pine with five framing nails to go through. Between the first and second tests, we’ll switch blades. For the first section, we’re running the LENOX LAZER CT carbide tipped blade for medium metal. When we get to our wood cutting applications we’ll switch to LENOX DEMOLITION CT carbide tipped blade.

These are fun to watch but, I’ve learned not to make decisions based purely on beast mode power, as I age I find myself more interested in the total user experience. I would like to know more about Makita’s vibration control, ergonomics etc. which one is more pleasant to use. It makes a big difference after a while.

Great video! The Makita 40v XGT recip saw is an absolute monster that I'd love to see against the Milwaukee in orbital mode.

Awesome quick review. I’m a dewalt guy however they really need to do some r & d in a few of their products including the recip saw, and impact driver! To be the man you got to beat the man! When you watch a video on a Milwaukee sawzall you would be shocked if it didn’t win!

@Pro Tool Reviews. Thanks Kenny and Tom for the recip saw review. The Dewalt, Makita, and Milwaukee recips will all get the job done. But it does look like the Dewalt will wear you out if you've got alot of cutting to do especially if it's cast iron. I have the Makita and I really like the job it does and it has low vibration. Please keep these tests coming.

Hope you, the staff at PTR, and your families stay safe and well.

Well, as always Milwaukee is pulling the most power out of an 18V tool, and as always that's gonna affect longevity massively. For me, it's the Makita. They nail that balance between power, reliabilty and value for money for a long time now. Plus the batteries are super quick to charge, affordable and with over 360 tools they have by far the most 18v tools available anywhere.

Vibration takes it toll on tools and nerves in the hands and arms
After 40 years of framing
Go
with the least vibration
Makita

Thanks for mentioning vibration. This is often overlooked, or dismissed as 'you are too weak'

DIDNT FLEX CLAIM TO HAVE THE BEST OF EVERYTHING?? Put the ripsaw vs the super sawsall by Milwaukee...

I use the Makita 36v on construction sights. Everyone does a double take when they see it. I use a 12" Milwaukee wrecking blade and it cuts through everything, nails, soft wood and hardwood. Faster than the 18v Makita and Milwaukee on sights. Most of the time I do all the cutting or the guys just grab my saw. ( don't put all your eggs in one basket)

As a plumber that Lenox Lazer cuts cast iron amazing! Way better than the milwaukee torch and diablo carbides.

The Makita saw design is coming up on 5 years old. Maybe a new refreshed design will put them back on top.

I heard from two millwrights that Metabo HPT's 36V reciprocating saw is faster than Milwaukee's Super Sawzall.

Try not using orbital action.. keep the playing field level for all saws

Seems like the super sawzall has a hard time cutting hard metals. Ive seen other head to heads and everytime theres some hard metal that saw just doesnt cut as you would expect after seeing how fast it is through wood. Maybe it's only good on orbital?

Does the Makita DJR360 36V model delver more power to the cutting blade? or is it just longer run time?
