In 1939 a psychology experiment called The Monster Study was conducted in Iowa Davenport. To this day, the study is considered one of the most unethical experiments ever conducted. It involved 22 orphans and the objective was to induce stuttering in normal speaking children. To see whether telling stutterers that their speech was fine would help them recover. What was well-intentioned in the first place turned out to be one of the most unethical experiment ever conducted in the field of psychology which caused a lifelong trauma to the participants of the study. In the end, the experiment was never published in a peer-reviewed journal and it was bitterly dubbed as The Monster Study by the participants themselves

In the thumbnail, I was hoping somebody would notice the dude with the bowl cut on the right. The dude even has The Rock's signature eyebrow but nobody noticed 😭

I stutter when I was a kid, most people made fun of me and get angry when I stutter instead but some are good and nice to me. So what happens to me when I get older is, I stutter around the people that mock me for my stutter. And speak fluently in front of people that was nice to me. Surprisingly, I was the top student in public speaking just because I was speaking in front of strangers

As the saying goes, ‘the path to hell is paved with good intentions’. Hope something like this never happens again.

As someone who has been stuttering throughout my life, words that those children were told evoked anger within me. "Don't speak at all unless you do it right" is the worst recommendation you can give to a stutterer

I think calling this the "Monster Study" compared to other, much more dark, unethical, heinous experiments is a bit much. I was expecting something to floor me and open up my mind but this can be summed as bullying kids with stutters until they're too insecure to speak. Awful, yes. Unethical, yes. Monster Study...? Eh.

Whenever someone has a difficulty speaking i always feel so empathetic. It makes me so sad to know how troubled people are, nobody should be treated poorly for their incapabilities

This is how I grew up. My mother put me through this for 11 years until I left home. The psychological damage done to me has been profound.

Now imagine all of the experiments that have been done on children we don't know about.

The amount of horrific studies they have done to the orphans in WWI and WWII is just terrifying..

This is why I don't make fun of people's speech impediments

Mary Tudor was also the name of an English queen who had a sick mind. So much so that she was called Bloody Mary. Interesting how the names are the same.

Hearing about these old experiments is always tough as lots of them ended up being unethical and cruel, causing significant damage in the participants. I just finished hearing of some from Shrouded Hand, and the lifelong trauma these experiments did is so awful. While $1 million might sound like a lot, it will never fix the damage the tests did.
Thanks for the video, I appreciate you putting the effort into drawing all your own visuals. Good work!

I would have liked to have learned what some of the long term and short term effects of this study were on the orphans in more detail. For it to be dubbed the Monster Study, I expect there were some more after-effects than stuttering in class and not talking with your best friend. It was a good video, but a little more detail would have made it better. (I am going to research this study out of curiosity)

Wow! Even at my ripe age, I felt strong unease when I heard the sentence at 3:45 - the potency of such statements is often overlooked by adults but, I'm sure many can still recall how, as children, just a few words would be enough to terrify them.

Ethically speaking, all studies should be named by the participants

“Hey man how do we make up for scarring kids for a big part of their lives?”

“Ah yes, just give them money, money makes up for everything.”

To call this title clickbait is more than an understatement
