i actually went over a similar experiment to the smokey room experiment in my psychology class, what they did was had people fall in a crowded train car under different conditions. i also got to reenact the experiment myself, once in the school hallways as a part of the class another in a mall as extra credit. in the hallways people didn't really help until a teacher did and in the mall not a single person helped me get up

My dad signed up for a psychological experiment once. It was a series of seemingly unrelated questions (what major did you pick for college, whats your favourite colour, did you have a dog growing up, etc), and then the offer of "the other person with you did 25% of the work, you did 75%. we could split the money 50/50 or we could give you part of his share because he did less work." He realized the questions were bullshit and the real experiment was if they'd take more money, despite screwing over the other person because "if they did more work so they deserved a bigger share" etc etc. The other dude wasn't going to get the money at all- he was an actor, so they were basically just offering him extra money. He took it (broke college student) but did at least tell them that he was kind of a spoiled participant because he realized what the real test was, and advised they at least pick a theme with their questions.

I think YouTube might be doing something similar to the Facebook Emotion Manipulation Experiment, because sometimes I get recommend extremely disturbing content that has nothing to do with the stuff I watch, and they also show up a lot in search results (like, I search for something completely unrelated like a cat video, and get videos with stuff like maggots or people with extreme anorexia in the results). I thought I was the only person going through that, but there's a lot of Reddit posts on this subject.

Edit: after posting this comment, the disturbing recommendations have finally stopped. I now get recommended videos hating on my gender and nationality 🤷
