FIA Stewards can now fine $1M euros to Formula One drivers.
On Thursday, Formula One drivers expressed astonishment and shock after the sport's governing body multiplied the amount stewards may punish them to a maximum of 1 million euros.
The previous limit of 250,000 euros, they added, had not been reviewed or adjusted in at least 12 years and "does not reflect the current needs of motor sport."
The new limit, according to Mercedes' George Russell, director of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA), "seems obscene."
"In my first year of Formula One (at Williams), I was on a five-figure salary and actually lost over six figures from paying for my trainer, paying for flights, paying for an assistant," he told reporters before the U.S. Grand Prix.
"All we want is transparency and understanding." "I believe the fines are already out of hand," Russell remarked."It feels like these numbers are being plucked out the air."
