Fix buzzing/humming sound after doorbell security camera install

If you get a humming/buzzing sound from chime after doorbell security camera install. This should fix it.
CORRECTION: I didnt have a 10ohm so I ended up using an 11 ohm resistor. I am a hobbiest and mechanical engineer, that does extensive research, but in no way a "professional". *make sure to use correct wattage resistor, to match your transformer.

OMG It worked on my ANCIENT doorbell. The electrician who installed it was clueless, so I told him I could live with the hum. I was lying to myself. Got the 10 omh 5 watt, and it's 90% better. I have to put my ear to the wall to hear it now, whereas before I heard it walking down the hall. You've helped a not so helpless old woman tremendously. TY

Been having this issue for months with my Nest Hello Doorbell and was about to give up. Your solution worked. Was about to pay $200 for handyman to fix it, but was able to fix it myself for $5. Thank you so much!!

This makes sense. The doorbell/camera (Ring or whatever) is drawing a small current all the time, which makes the chime solenoids vibrate. Putting a resistor in parallel with the solenoid passes part of that current around the solenoid coil and through the resistor. You could also completely disable the chime solenoid by shorting across it - basically a zero-ohm resistor.

You are a life saver. I knew it was receiving more than usual electricity but didn't know what I needed. Going to get a resister right now. THANKS!!!

I have the same chime with a Ring 4 doorbell. The plunger was sticking (about 5-10 seconds) when doorbell was pressed. I went into my ring app and changed ring type setting to mechanical (instead of digital). It solved my problem.

It worked! I've been having this issue for over a year, got worse this week and stumbled upon this video. Thanks for the video

Ordered 10 ohm 1/2 watt and this took all of 60 seconds to install and humming gone!! Love it! Thanks for tip!

Great informative explanation and tutorial, straight to the point! IDK why my new video doorbell caused the chime to do that and the old video doorbell didn’t, but regardless glad we got you to explain! Thanks for your time and effort!

A 10 ohm, 1/2 watt resistor worked perfectly for me to eliminate hum from an ADT video doorbell. Thanks!

Thanks for this tip it worked great for me. My doorbell was humming really bad once I installed a Nest Hello Video Door Bell. I do a lot of tinkering with electronics so I have an assortment of resistors. But they were all 1/4 watt size. So what I did was combine two 22 ohm resistors in parallel which gave me 11 ohms @ 1/2 watt capacity combined. I tested the resistance of the two resistors in parallel with my ohm meter and I was right at 11 ohms. Once I installed the resistors I tested everything to make sure the camera and doorbell were still good. Touched the resistors after a few minutes to make sure they were not heating up and they were cool to the touch. I'm so glad there is no more hum it was driving me bonkers.

My SkyBell SH02300SL HD WiFi Video Doorbell unit had the same issue. This was a great fix for me. Thanks for sharing.

Update: I found I have the ring power kit v2, it took about 30 mins to make the chime ring after the installation. After that it works as expected. So I use the ring power kit v2 kit with the chime now.
Update: My chime does not sound after add the resistor....
Thank you! This fixed my annoy experience for half year.

Thank you! My new simplisafe doorbell camera was causing this buzzing. This worked perfectly and fixed it! Found these resistors in packs of 20 on ebay. 😁

I had an issue where I tried to replace my existing button with a video doorbell (Merkury with the Geeni app). The video & app notification when the doorbell button was pushed both worked great, but the mechanical chime (a NuTone from the early 60's) would not work. It tried to activate both of the plungers and it made a humming/buzzing noise. The existing transformer was showing 20VAC, but after watching some other videos online & reading what happened to others, I ended up getting one that was a 24VAC 40Va for more current. That fixed the problem of the chime not working when the video doorbell button was pushed. Many thanks to my stepdad for helping me with the wiring & the multimeter usage. I did have to use the white adapter that came with the video doorbell which helped get rid of the humming that was occurring.

I just did this to my digital chime. Hopefully it works. My digital time would buzz randomly, like chime was overloading with electricity, so that's why I did this. Shame on Amazon for not fixing this issue on there new 2020 doorbell version. By the way, my transformer is 16v 30vac.

This did the trick on my possessed doorbell chime. Thanks!

My front doorbell only went "ding", not the two tone. I opened it up and noticed that the plunger spring had compacted. I pulled the plunger out and stretched the spring so that the top of the plunger was about an 1/8th inch off the chime plate. Now I have the two tone again.
