Love the review.
The way I budget my purchases is very simple. I budget £5.00 per day over 6 years. To achieve this I save £6 per day over 6 years and that is when I make my upgrades, every 5-6 years. This gives me the ability to invest with very long term usage use cases. Sure there is the risk that software updates (OS and apps) might not travel in the correct direction and may provided some challenges, but so far so good for me. Every 6 years I have about £10k to invest in kit. In between I may upgrade Monitors (if absolutely needed). This is not just for computing power, but for all my other accessories like Monitor, expanders like USB/Thunderbolt, storage, etc.

My Ultra is finally on its way to me after 2 months of waiting. Ultra built-to-order Studios are the toughest to get - so unless you NEED the Ultra, you’ll get a Max much sooner.

I've been working with the M1 Mac mini. It definitely needs a fast SSD for your footage and cache. It also could use more USB-C connections. There are two connections, and one will be taken up by a USB-C monitor. Without an expensive hub you may not be able to hook up every USB-C device you want to use.

I would definitely recommend it for editors who are starting out or don't have much work yet. The Studio would definitely be a worthwhile update for those who have a steady flow of editing work.

I'm working on editing videos from my churches service. Nothing as of yet needing 4k encoding just 1080P or less. I was kinda set on the Mac Mini until the limitations of what the M1 in it's supported ports wise. Now when I get a chance I might pickup a new Mac Mini with M2 in it since this seems like a much more capable SoC. Currently doing all this in Davinci Resolve on my work/gaming pc (Ryren 3600x/ RX580 gpu). It gets it done, not nearly as fast as the M1.

Great tips, but I would upgrade the RAM regardless. The base Mac Studio MAX with Resolve 17 handles (1) stream of 4K/3:1 BMPCC 4K RAW & (1) stream of 4K Pro Res HQ with several LUTS just fine on a 4K timeline for my standard (2) camera projects. When stacking (4) mixed streams of 4K BRAW, 2.5K CNDG and 1080P CDNG on it starts dropping to 18-22 FPS until render, and than it plays back smooth. Not bad for a small $2K computer minus all the PC parts picking/GPU shortages.

Appreciate your input for wedding filmmakers! Not everyone can afford the best setup and I'm glad u know it :D I'm editing my videos on macbook air with m1 and now i want to sell my 2019 intel iMac. Basic M1 chip is really powerful! Also i can recommend Huawei Mate display 28". It's not as good as studio display but for sure it's bang for buck.

Your words are true.. the mistake that some people make is buying for their current needs.. but the smart one is the one who does not compare the high price when he plans to use it for a long time.. and buy it with specifications to challenge the future if new devices appear.. if you want to buy... buy advanced technology It serves you and you do not have to face problems in the future such as downloading and delaying the editing work

This is a great video, providing a balanced list of options. I’d encourage people to invest in external storage and just transcode/create low resolution proxies. I’ve spoken to numerous Hollywood editors and none of them edit 4K, 6K, 8K, RAW, etc. They edit 1080p or 720p ProRes Proxy or DNxHR LB then relink to the master after the edit is locked.

Excuse for offtop, in my plans to buy 4K monitor for my editing laptop, but - how much 4K monitor will load GPU of video card by 4K resolution? In this case is it better to stay with 2K monitor?

I want to leave Proxy land. Hate it. Using a7s3 footage with Premiere and really hesitant to jump to Resolve though I hear it’s better.

Do you have any experience/benchmarks with the combo at the 120 fps option?

Hi Matt, dumb question! Are you still editing your video files off an external ssd, or is there enough space inside the studio to have it all on there until the project is done?
