That is why I drive a 51 year old car (1964 Ford Fairlane 4 door sedan) This is a daily driver, not a show car or collector car. I drive it on a daily basis. I am a professional mechanic, and this car can be kept going forever. It has no electronics, and is very simple to work on. All parts, including engines and transmissions, are readily available. It currently burns a little oil, but I just pour more in. No emissions crap to worry about on this car. It was a factory non A/C car, and I installed an aftermarket underdash unit to make it driveable here in the AZ summer heat. I also added a 4 row radiator, so it never overheats. Unless it gets wrecked, I fully intend to drive this car for the rest of my life (I'm 56) I do have a low mileage 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis, but it rarely gets driven, other than on long trip. I'm a maintenance fanatic, and expect it to last at least 300, 000 miles, which is likely longer than I will last.

But Scotty is right about these modern FWD cars. They are mostly junk right off the new car lot, and not worth fixing when anything major goes wrong out of warranty. That's why I paid 1/3 the price of a new subcompact car for my Mercury, which did not include any sales tax or dealer fees or markups, because I bought it from a private seller. A brand new car is probably one of the worst purchases you can make. With the super high MSRP, destination charges, initial depreciation, sales tax, high registration fees, high dealer doc fees, and the need for full coverage insurance, which cost about 5 times what liability alone costs in my area, you are literally throwing away over half of what you pay for a new car.

That Chrysler at the beginning looks like it came straight from the junkyard.

More good advice from Scotty. I'm a contractor, not a mechanic, but if you're honest and fair with people you'll never run out of work. It's about playing the long game. You can make a lot of money in the short term by cheating people, but they'll never call you back and certainly won't recommend you to friends!

I wish I had a mechanic like Scotty....you don't find people like that much nowadays.

He didn't mention old cars, because when you own an old car, it doesn't need to be replaced.
