Welcome back to the Beginner's Guide to Sewing! In this episode, we show how to make a garment smaller by taking in the side seams. We show how to adjust the waistband of a simple seam and how to alter the waistband of a seam with a zipper installed. Knowing the foundation of alternating clothes will help you better understand garment construction and pattern making. It's also important to practice proper fit on different types of bodies with different types of silhouettes.

It's very likely that the garment you're altering is constructed differently than mine, so be sure to take pictures of how you opened the seams. That way you have a reference when putting everything back together.

I don't know how likely it is to receive a response 7+ yrs after a video was published, but will this technique work on pants with pockets on the side seam? I assume using the method in the video would either eat into the pocket if it was taken in evenly across the seam, or push the pocket backwards if taken only from the back of the seam. Is this the best way to take in pants with pockets, e.g., chinos or jeans, or is there another technique I could follow for these garments?

You are a great teacher. I realize the videos are intended to be short, but maybe a slightly slower pace, especially as yo work with the fabric would help. You are giving me a great start, but I find the need to locate other videos to get more details. I’d rather stay here for the whole project. I am a beginner, so speed is not my first priority. Thanks so much!

I purchased a dress that has an existing zipper however it fits well but I want the bottom of my dress to come in more towards my legs so I'm wondering if it's possible if I can go up under where the zipper ends and start tapering down without getting a buckling in the side where that zipper is is it possible

I appreciate the video, I just wish she would’ve used a less busy garment like a plain pair of pants that could be altered as well.
