2024 Toyota HiLux 48V Review | Toyota’s top-seller gets electrified

The 2024 Toyota HiLux update might seem a bit blink-and-you’ll-miss-it on the surface.

But go beyond the tweaked grille and bumpers and you’ll find a new 48-volt electrical assist system called V-Active Technology fitted to its long-running 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine.

Designed to provide both performance and fuel consumption improvements, the mild-hybrid system comes standard with the HiLux SR5 4x4 dual-cab auto on test here, for only a moderate price bump over the model it replaces.

In terms of the level of electrification coming to the market with the BYD Shark and Ford Ranger plug-in hybrids and other utes in the future, this is only a small step into the future.

But it is a step and it does improve the driving experience of Australia’s second most popular ute.

If it's 2 L / 100km more efficient that before then it doesn't take long at all to recoup the $2600 premium. You say that it does, but with diesel at over $A 2 per litre, you save about $40 per 1000km.

Some of these things do huge km so with the better performance and better economy/reliability it seems well worth it

The main reason you buy any Toyota is because it will last forever with basic maintenance. If you get anything else it's a bonus.

Good honest review bloke. As for electric seats, most will never change theirs once the seat is in the desired position.

I got the 2016 GUN125R SR5 and goes well. my next door mate just got this model. His has already been in the shop with some battery issue. The whole volt kit was replaced under warranty. took a month with a 2020 loaner

The SR also gets the 48v system and the dealer cost is only $800 more than the stock diesel FYI

It's a 2.8 D4D engine and not the newer 2.8 GD6 engine. How comes non of the reviewers are picking up this?

My last 4 vehicles have been a Hilux. I like the reliability, but the expense now for what you get in regards to features is making me a little indecisive. They're just getting too expensive for what they are😩

Love your honesty but restraint, a great review. What is it going to take to drag the three ellipses to the future?

I wish they'd make this hybrid starter system an option for the gas powered American Tacoma 2 door cab.

Will this be reliable and easy to fix?

Not even a tub liner 😅 what a joke, I’ve got a 2017 xlt ranger, which ( touch wood ) has been great. The only thing I don’t like is auto trans, but you get used to it. The quality of the reverse camera display 2017 is better than Toyotas current model. Toyotas tech game is not real flash, not a deal breaker but makes you wonder. I like Toyotas my partner has a 2021 rav 4 hybrid and it’s great. I’d like to one day get a new car, but for this price it is very standard and next to no extras, a new charging point, like are you serious 😅 considering - d-max or I’ll see what Toyota hiluxs do in the next year or 2. Car prices are a joke.

The funny thing is, everyone be complaining about how old and outdated this is, but they can't stop buying it 😂

Still a 2019 Ancap rated vehicle should not be promoted, advertising budget for car sales.

In Europe Toyota Europe have a big problem with certification of 2.8 engine and we still dont have models Hilux Gr sport 2 and dont have Hilux 48v mild hybrid. Our neighbour Ukrainian have gr sport 2 until september 2023r. This is fault of European Union. Now september 2024 we cant buy any new Hilux😢
