I was working for Toyota in vehicle testing when we were testing the prototype versions of this vehicle back in 2018 and 2019. We tested them all over Australia in every terrain possible, often with a non mild hybrid hilux as a baseline. There was some teething problems to be expected, but the mild hybrid excelled. I was starting to think we weren’t going to see it in Australia

Auto sparky/diesel fitter here
Worked on heaps of equipment with similar technology
Bought a 2024 sr5 48v not long ago and love it

I’d absolutely have one. I’d like to see the take the tech further than the mild application. It’s not new tech at all and diesel pairs perfectly with electric. There are a bunch of different variant applications

Already have one! Love it! I figure it’s in the new Prado platform and a brand like Toyota/ Prado wouldn’t do it if they hadn’t done the homework. Also no intention of doing deep water or mud.

I think it’s a good innovation. It should reduce turbo lag will save fuel. Accessories using the battery will be a useful tool.

I am a fan of the tech as long as it is done right. The idea comes from railway locomotives and those go for millions of miles and have been a fan of those for a while as well. The tech was bulky and heavy up until now and with the advances in super conductors I think it is a matter of time that we see something epic. I typically wait for Mercedes since they usually figure out how to engineer the pieces for longevity.

I've got the 48v rouge. Not sure on the SR5 models but you can turn off the 48v side of things and just keep it running as a normal ICE vehicle.

Looks awesome Shaun and even better cuts down the fuel bill which is even better. And as you was saying it’s still a Hilux you can not go wrong with that

I wonder how expensive and hard replacing that 48V generator is when you drown it in a bog hole....

I should be picking up my brand new Hilux this week but it's NOT a 48 volt version. The announcement of the 48v is what got me to Toyota to order the Hilux that I did so I could get one before they all go "mildly hybrid". I don't want issues with that stuff in the middle of the Simpson.

I've had my 48V Rogue for a few months now and you barely notice the hybrid setup at all. Most new Toyotas come with start/stop tech so if you're used to it already, you won't notice a thing. The only thing missing is brake hold. The Kluger has it and it's great at the lights. Otherwise the Rogue is a great trade between work and play.

Basically, a bigger battery and a bigger alternator/motor that give or take power.

I arrived a sceptic but this sounds promising actually 🤔
