Up on the hill
People never stare
They just don't care
Chinese music under banyan trees
Here at the dude ranch above the sea

Aja
When all my dime dancin' is through
I run to you

Up on the hill
They've got time to burn
There's no return
Double helix in the sky tonight
Throw out the hardware
Let's do it right

Aja
When all my dime dancin' is through
I run to you

Up on the hill
They think I'm okay
Or so they say
Chinese music always sets me free
Angular banjoes
Sound good to me

Aja
When all my dime dancin' is through
I run to you

This album was released in September 1977, when I was 16 living in the Northeast Bronx. Never heard of them. The following year, a friend in high school loaned it to me, along with albums Styx, Queen, The Police, Foreigner and a few others. Immediately, I bought a copy of Aja and played that vinyl into the ground every day. I'd been singing gospel since I was 10, exposed to R&B and Pop later, and co-writing contemporary R&B at 14. Steely Dan simply blew me away. I'd never heard anything like it and I mean nobody was grooving like this. They had a signature sound. What is awesome about Steely Dan's music is that, decades later, it is STILL most beautiful and most timeless.

Back in 77, This LP was played on top notch stereos, like Marantz and Macintosh, with turntables that had Stanton EEE Cartridges' late into the night with Heineken's, a little pure coke, Backgammon and with a little of the Purp and only the best of friends . It was the Soundtrack to our Lives ....

I first heard this album on a road trip to Yosemite Valley, California. I was eighteen in 1977 and psyched to test my rock climbing skills on these beautiful towering granite walls. There, with my best friend from high school and another climbing buddy, we set off to climb the El Capitan Nose route. I wasn't in my best physical shape, and after 700 feet, we lost a punctured gallon water jug. I volunteered to rappel to the ground so Olaf and Bob would have a better chance of reaching the summit. So when I hear the Aja song now, I feel that prior dopamine rush that I experienced 47 years ago by seeing the majestic beauty if the Valley 😊

A MOST PERFECT ALBUM - if your hosting a dinner party put this on in the background at low-mid level volume and I guarentee people will be milling about and socializing and won't even know why! Just sayin' been there done it!

I am still listening in 2024 since this group and their music is just as fresh, relevant and timeless as they first were back in the 1970's.

Grammy award winning record producer/arranger/Warner Bros.- ABC Record A&R Man/Accomplished pianist, Michael Omartian playing the grand piano. He has been one of Fagan and Becker's great collaborators since Pretzel Logic to The Nightfly. That's him on Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Dr.Wu, Your Gold Teeth ll, Bad Sneekers, Aja and New Frontier just to name a few of the great hits!

It was worth doing my military service on 1980 just because a military buddy introduced me to this amazing band ❤️

I hoarded several copies of Steely Dan in near mint condition back around 1995 to about 2000. The Goodwill's and thrifts were full of smoking great albums. Everyone got on the CD kick. I knew it would come to an end and records would be back. A 1000 at least records later I am loving it even more so now.
