According to a 2001 study by the International Committee of the Red Cross, the civilian to soldier death ratio in wars fought since the mid-20th century has been 10:1, meaning ten civilian deaths for every soldier death.[8] Throughout the 20th century and into the 21st, the number of civilian casualties as a proportion of total casualties has been rising.

@barrach7 The reason far more civilians were killed in WWII was the very reason we fought, and many died. The white poppy is not in honour of the civilians killed, it is in protest of what society stands for, which in this particular time of the year, is respect for those who gave their lives so you could question the appropriateness of a white poppy. FYI, there were not more civilians killed in WWI than servicemen. The poppy is a symbol for everything that the people wearing it don't do.

Perhaps you're missing the point and the question should be over the appropriateness of the red poppy and the push for and glorification of ALL wars by the British Legion et al. Am ex forces myself, come from generations of 'forces' members and lost many of our family on battelfields, as civvies on streets of Poland, in gulags etc. Perhaps think about this, and WWII aside, consider how many 'wars' since have been really in the intrerests of peace. ASk yourself...MOD or Ministry of Attack.
