Why are the Scottish Greens wearing white Poppies?

Показать описание
At First Minister’s Questions this morning, the leaders of each political party were invited to commemorate the lives lost during both the first and second world war’s ahead of Remembrance Day this Sunday 11 November.
While the conventional red symbol represents the bright poppy fields of Flanders which flourished in the middle of so much chaos and destruction, the white poppy stands not only to commemorate all victims of war, but to represent a commitment to peace too.
First produced in 1933, the white poppies worn by Green co-leader’s Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater aim to challenge the glorification of conflict and remind us of the need to resist war and its causes today.
In recent months Lorna Slater has been outspoken about Israeli offensives in Gaza, criticising the SNP’s Angus Robertson for meeting Israel's deputy ambassador to the UK this summer.
In a post on X this August, Slater wrote: “It's a disgrace that the SNP met with the Israeli government to discuss so-called 'mutual interests' like energy & culture whilst that apartheid Israeli regime is committing a genocide in Gaza.”
Poppy Scotland provides support for current and former members of the Armed Forces as well as their families. UK wide Royal British Legion provide lifelong support to serving and ex-serving personnel and their families.
Other MSP’s such as the SNP’s Elena Whitham were also wearing white poppies at FMQ’s today.
