STUDY

I agree with what you said since different careers have insanely different requirements for entry. What I love about cybersecurity is the fact that the degree can be overlooked when you have more experience, better projects or just good networking skills. It’s true that connections play a really big role in your success, but I’d like to believe that at the end of the day, your skills will be what makes the true difference.

STUDY: I decided to enroll next year at WGU but decided to send over my transcripts from ITT Tech anyway. I didnt think they would have taken any of the classes since the degree was from 2005...but they took ALL of the gen ed classes. The IT classes have an expiration date of 5 yrs but I guess gen ed classes don't have an expiration date. Along with the AWS Cloud Practioner, the ITT courses completed almost 1/3 of the degree! I am going to finish the Google IT Support and the AWS certifications before my start date next year to cut down even more classes b4 I start.

"STUDY" I started watching your content a few years back, solely due to fast-tracking through WGU. Because of the hours of watching your content, I got both Google IT & Cyber Security certs, I took your $500 Cyber Security course and took the CompTIA Security+ in a few weeks. I landed my first IT job in October because of my social circle. But your course labs and all the CompTIA certs helped me not feel like a complete impostor, new in the industry. All my coworkers know about the benefits of WGU. I am not sure if certs are most important. I feel like experience comes first. Thanks, Josh.

Online schools are a great opportunities for getting/finishing your degree. In the end, your experience outranks your degree/certifications like you said. Having a home lab, internships, or any real word experience is key for clutching that job in the cybersecurity industry, showing proof to your potential employer you got the chops to succeed in the role!

STUDY: I think degrees help open doors, but in cybersecurity, hands-on experience often matters more. I earned a bachelor's in cybersecurity from a small college, and while the degree helped with interviews, it was certifications, personal projects, and CTF participation that got me hired. Degrees provide a foundation, but practical skills often outweigh prestige. I’ve seen people with strong portfolios and certifications like OSCP land jobs faster than those with advanced degrees but little experience.

STUDY

I work in tech without a related degree so ive been looking at hacking a degree at WGU using Study and Sophia. I think the benefit of this is bypassing the HR firewall that blocks those without degrees and the hands on experience is really the best way to learn. Its crazy that some people get a degree done in 6 months when normally it takes 4 years. I feel that colleges will soon have to adapt or theyll start losing out to these faster online universities

STUDY: Degrees do play a significant amount of role towards your career, this is a sort of tradition for a long time that degree is very important which it is it does provide you with a lot of foundations but there are instances where degree is not really building your skill let's take an example from Our programming fields that if you want to build a nice project you want to you know do your research and dig deeper like you want to make an app or a game then you will have to you know polish upon your fundamentals and upgrade your skill set basically so that means that you will have to learn a little bit more of the programming language, if we are making a game then you will have to learn some other things like Blender and any game engine in general Unity or Unreal etc there are other things that are involved in game making but i conclude that for me what I have seen is that if you can actually do real life work with just help of degree then you can actually say that it was a useful degree otherwise some degrees or some curriculums will not go deep into particular let say like game making a project like that pushes you to learn specific and some general technologies, same goes for app making, automation, data analysis, web dev etc

STUDY : I agree with this, but real world experience or at least a cert or projects related to the field is also important. In my country its a very different situation, we need a degree to even apply for a job. Also thanks for all your efforts to help students.

STUDY - I work in tech, and only have a non-tech degree. I don’t have certs, so I can’t relate directly to Josh’s views. But, I think what he said makes sense. The reason you land a job can be random.
One of the hiring managers that interviewed me saw that I had a Philosophy degree. I think he also studied that in school, and thought it could help an employee with logic.

STUDY

The idea of speedrunning a degree (specifically for IT/Cyber) is awesome. If you can lock-in a year of just study and get it over with as quickly (and cost-effectively) as possible, the quicker you can have a credential (degree) that :

1. Doesn't expire
2. Ticks an HR checkbox (for better or worse, HR hasn't gotten the hint that most IT/cyber related roles DO NOT need a degree)
3. Opens doors to management/senior roles

Also, the money you save from that route (vs traditional college) can go into reinvesting into yourself (certs that actually matter, homelab, minimizing/avoid student debt in the first place, side-hustles, etc). It would be nice if other industries that can realistically have this approach as well, take this approach as well.
