Great Video Skall, totally agree with you! I am 5 times World Champion in knife throwing and it took me sooo many tries to penetrate Zombie head when i was in Arkansas with ZGB 2 years ago. But with the Axe/tomahawk its actually not that hard (moving target - different story) Maybe topic for another video ? :)

Short answer: Very hard.
Long answer: With years of practice and a strong enough arm and knife, you could conceivably chuck the blade hard enough to pierce the skull, but banking on it to silently insta-kill someone is a fools errand.

Love this video because knife throwing is a big hobby of mine and I always see these issues in pop culture too. This japanese knife throwing manual I read said there are three reasons for throwing a knife and they take priority in order.

1. Provide a distraction: you can throw a knife to misslead them by making them bring up their guard or dodge. This could allow you to close distance and strike, throw another knife or even run away.

2. Damage or disable target: this you want to aim mainly for the abdomen or groin. Liver is the best point to aim for as it can cause a lot of bleeding. You can also target legs and arms but these take less priority as they are harder to hit and might not deal enough damage to disable the limb. Inner thigh is the one exception to this (i forget which thigh specifically has that artery.)

3. "Neutralise target": this falls last on the list because it is the hardest to accomplish. The chest is a no go as the ribs are more then enough to stop a knife. The manual lists the best targets as the neck, the mouth (open), temples, eyes, ears and nasal area. Some of those targets have the thinest or softest bones in the skull. Again this falls under last priority because it is exceptionally difficult to accomplish that one hit takedown.

I write fantasy, and in one of my fight scenes I waned my protagonist to do an instant kill by throwing a knife into a bad guys head. After thinking it through, I came up with the logic that going for the chest would be a much more realist approach. However, watching this video has given me great insight on the matter and has changed my thoughts, so thank you for that! I hope to see more videos like this in the future.
