Getting a consistent volume level for your podcast, videos and productions is important. One speaker can be too quiet causing the listener to turn up the volume followed by a loud voice from another speaker that shocks your listener. This is not the best listening experience. Learn how to get volume levels the same using loudness and compression audio tools.

Adobe Audition Learn Series Part 3:

0:00 - Intro
0:12 - Comparison between podcast host and guest at different volume levels
0:39 - Switching to multitrack mode
0:54 - Put volume recorded at different levels on separate tracks
1:13 - Start by using the Match Clip Loudness tool
2:25 - Use the Dynamics effect on each track
2:41 - Switch on and setup a compressor
4:11 - Adjust a compressor again for the next track
5:19 - Check to make sure volume levels match
5:35 - Mixing down audio from multitrack to get a final waveform
5:58 - How the audio looked before any adjustments
6:09 - Conclusion on volume leveling

I’d recommend matching the loudness rather than normalising. Match loudness uses a clever algorithm to analyse the perceived loudness of the audio rather than the statistics of normalising. This gives the compressor a better chance at getting the levels the same without using a harsh compression setting.

I followed the steps you showed, 3 different mics, and the results were exactly what I was looking to do. Thank you, excellent tutorial.

I use WaveLab, open its native "plugin" - MultiBand Compressor, select "Vocals" preset and hit "Apply" :)

I always struggle a bit with compression - it just seems to all work backwards for my brain! But I needed to level out some audio and walking me through with this just got the job done brilliantly, thank you Mike.

would you recommend DeEsser Denoise Dereverb and such before "Match Loudness" and "Speech Volume leveler" and then ENCN?

Thank you! Do you have any videos around this same topic but for music? I edit my own music for my group fitness classes and I want the volumes to be consistent so I am not always having to adjust the speaker in between songs in class! Thank you!

I have the issue of all the given audio on one file. Two mics, two speakers, one speaker is coming out loud and clear and the other is low and echoes.

Curious about the "order of operations" when it comes to applying multiple effects in a multi track podcast with 2-3 speakers/tracks. Dereverb; Dynamics -Autogate (for breaths/background noise); Loudness matching and/or Dynamics - Compressing (as you show in this video); Parametric EQ; Normalizing; etc. What order should you do them in? Do some cancel out the need for others? Since both are in the "Dynamics" window, would you set your auto gate and your compression at the same time, or do it as two different effects in the effects rack?

Thanks again for your brilliant, clear instruction. Now, oh, dear, I've got to try to do it.
