Everytime, every person does the sectioning wrong. You need to keep the front ponytail right in the middle of your brows and your back ponytail super high. Wrong sectioning is why you get choppy layers.

I had long hair, before that it passes my waist, , i had long straight hair and it was also thick and layered. I did a butterfly cut and it honestly turned out amazing, i love it so much ! my classmates also love it and think that it suits me, , and my hair was wet too earlier, but i figured out a way to make it pretty even if its wet

For long hairs, 3 ponytails are needed. Then it works.

1. Your pony tail is not high enough!
2. You NEED to cut a considerable amount of hair on the front side at least up to your chin to see the results.
3. Try to cut the same amount on both the parts (it really doesn't decrease the overall length of the hair).
