I trust you're not referring to 17 year old new drivers because they wouldn't get reasonable insurance for the Yaris, Mini or Renault.

my first cae was Škoda Fabia I. combi, such a brilliant and easy car. But now when I save enough money I bought Smart Fortwo III with automatic and I love it so much!! But I would say that you have to start driving a bigger car just to use to it and then decide :)

Id rather go for a car about 3+ years old, as a cars price usually halves in the first 3 years of ownership
