I live in Iowa and let me tell you. This is the most Iowa thing I’ve ever heard of.

Ooo I have a similar one to this. The Battle of Athens Tennessee 1946. Basically a town was just unfairly electing the same guy over and over again by a mix of ballot stuffing and extortion. A group of discharged soldiers tried to stop this legally but that didn't work. So they broke into the local National Guard Armory and stole like 70 weapons and then attacked the town jail on election night when the town council stuffed the ballot box from the safety of the jail.

Have you heard of the pig war of Puget sound? In 1859 A pig swam between islands and across national border and was eaten once found. A war almost broke out between Britain and the US.

There fears may have been justified!
Maybe you misunderstood: "The risk to the farmer's herd." As abortion of calves, when at the time, it may actually have meant the killing of the whole herd, a neighboring cattle that were exposed. Like with Brucellosis today.
