"Glad I'm not him."
Well done Doc.

This is *actually* the reason we can’t have nice things. This is why people don’t want to change. It’s frustrating.

I once saw someone else say, the people who say "I had to suffer and I turned out fine, so everyone else should suffer too", obviously didn't turn out fine

I interacted with an old surgeon when my mom had to go to the ER shortly after a knee replacement surgery. They suspected it was infected. The old surgeon washed his hands, then took off her dressing and touched her sutures without wearing gloves. He periodically rested his hands - that were touching infected blood - on the bed railings. He didn't wash his hands when he left. A woman came in after him with paper work, and rested her hands right on those same bed rails. Also didn't wash her hands.

~~And that's how you get staff infection outbreaks~~

I've found the best way to deal with these people is something like "and now people don't have to grow up thinking that making others suffer will solve their problems" or "so you want to hurt these people who have done nothing wrong", something blunt and accusatory

Omg this old person mentality is a major cause for a lot of our issues in this country right now. I suffered so everyone should suffer…

Kate: "My dad died of aortic stenosis before that procedure was developed."
Old Doc: "Glad I'm not your dad."
Kate: "Me too, Sir."

As someone with a disability/chronic illness: this is ACTUALLY how some older doctors act.

You should have had old parents. "When I was young, I fell off a porch and broke my tailbone and no one took me to the doctor" so just deal with your severe neck spasms after diving into a pool. Then my Mom told me I was having neck spasms because I was stressed out. I remember thinking, "but I'm only 9 years old!". Turns out I'd injured my neck - and 40+ years later continue living with the injury. I never complained though as I was told that everyone has pain and they just deal with it. Again, I was NINE years old. Lmao. It does leave me wondering when laying in a bed in the ER in extreme pain what everyone else is screaming about. I once had a closed loop bowel obstruction- the worst pain I've ever experienced in a life filled with pain- and the most sound I made was a tiny "oh!" when we went over a bump in the road. I guess I raised my son the same way- he had a massive heart attack at 26 and no one thought it was serious because "he didn't seem like he was in pain". He very much was. Lesson for the day: stoicism can mute indications that your patient is in pain.

I really feel like the whole point should be that we make the world better for everyone who comes after us.

“We didn’t have hour limits when I was-“ and that’s exactly why all your doctor friends were either dropping out like flies, struggling with horrible mental health issues, or literally collapsing from exhaustion and thus risking their patient’s care. So no, things were not “better in your day”.

"You'll grow out of it or you'll learn to live with it" said by everyone until literally now that I'm in my twenties and it's not getting better, ive learned to deal with it as i decline, so now im going to school to help people like me

The only reason you should look in your neighbor's bowl is to make sure they have enough.

People want improvement but only for themselves. They see better times for others and all of a sudden they become the problem. Never fails

I try to answer these sort of frustrating push backs with something like "im sorry that happened to you." Sometimes it doesnt land, but sometimes it reminds them that they didnt deserve struggles, so neither do others.

Ah yes, the "I had to struggle and am bitter / jealous you don't have to"

I'm picking up what you're putting down. I paid off my loans. I'm thrilled for all the people getting a *tiny* break with this loan forgiveness.
