Today we put the engine in Jean back together!

This was a challenge as I was struggling with ill health during this video. Luckily im now on the mend and feeling much better. The engine going back together was a heck of a challenge but I am so happy with how it turned out. The engine looks immaculate and I couldnt be happier

I feel that as you had got that far in stripping down the engine, new piston rings and valves were a must, I got an old cylinder head from a scrap yard and had it skimmed and fitted new valves to that so it was just a straight swap over.

Hey. It was nice to chat to you up at the rally last weekend. I’ve changed my timing chain last week. Your right the pulley nut is a nightmare. I ended up going and buying a 330nm impact gun to get it off.

The studs have different threads on each end for good reason, the Witworth is corse and is designed not to fracture the cast iron. The other end is UNF a WW@ attempt to unify fine threads. This stuff is such fun!

If a True Gold Seal engine then the engine number plate should start with 8G. A lot of engines were painted gold to ‘ mimic ‘ a gold seal because they were so sought after . True ones will have an I’d plate on them .

Some smartarse comments:

Painting the engine: You're doing it the right way, as in, painting the parts separately. It really burns my picnic basket when I see engines that have been fully assembled, and then painted, with every single nut and bolt a matching shade of paint.

Gloves and allergies: You've got latex gloves, which a lot of people are allergic to. Buy Nitrile ones instead.

Head studs: They should ideally thread into the block by hand. Your threads could do with a bit of a clean with a pipe cleaner. The ONLY thing you should put on more modern engine head bolts, is engine oil. That allows a slightly tighter and more accurate torque rating to be achieve. Don't use grease, it will splurge out and cause a mess.

Head gasket: I've never come across a head gasket that requires any compound when installing. All head gaskets old or new should be dry AF when installing. Same goes for the block and head faces. Some A-Series gaskets are copper on both sides; you always want the different coloured ringy bits around each cylinder facing upwards.

Goldseals: BL changed the engine numbers on all gold/silver engines, according to an older Moggy specialist that I used to know. Even if it's been repainted green, the engine number, if present, would give it away, if you know what to look for.

Clutch release bearing: You can remove the bearing with the clutch fork still installed. It may be marginally more fiddly but it is possible.

You should always block up holes like the thermostat to make sure that bits of engine do not disappear. Plus - always have a telescopic magnet to retrieve lost bits.

If you can remove the head, you can do the timing chain, its not too hard, the most difficult bit is removing the two rubber rings off the large cog without breaking the teeth.

Andrew Eggleton has the newer Borg and Beck clutch which has stronger springs, as the earlier ones had weak springs, he does them for £55

did you know there is an upgraded thrust bearing which lasts longer than the original carbon? they are on ebay, and are £65, I got myself one, as while the engine and box is out of the car, it's good to fit the upgraded one as it lasts longer and if the carbon one fails, its a 6 hour engine and box out job.

I'm sorry.
How on Earth did I miss this release? I'm ashamed of myself.
