Here in New Mexico the Native peoples planted corn seeds 10-12” deep where moisture is more available. Then Once the stalks were growing they plant runner beans in among the corn. The stalks provide the trellis for the beans to grow and the beans fix nitrogen for the soil.

I'm growing popcorn . It's the most exciting thing in my garden this year.

I did the same this year. After my broccoli was done in June, in that same space I planted a 4' x 4' area and I am just now harvesting. Doing really well and I am very satisfied.

Love that your videos are instructive! Not just a tour of the garden. Those are good too but knowledge rules! Thanks Gary!

T'is true! 30 years ago when I lived on Long Island, I had a little garden that consisted of four 4x4 squares. One square was devoted just to white corn. I got so much food from that garden...it was amazing- and the best corn I've ever eaten! Just getting back into gardening now, only now I live in KY and have 27 acres..but I'm still doing this method of gardening because it's efficient and just works great. I now have three 4x12 squares, and my neighbors think I'm nuts for having this tiny little garden...but wait till they see the results!

I appreciate that closeup of the corn at its early stage and how the silks look before it’s really taken off.

We built a 6 x 25' raised bed that is 12" deep open to good garden soil on the bottom. I grow 3 rows of a sweet variety called Incredible every year for July harvest then plant bush beans for fall harvest to add nitrogen back to the soil. We freeze the corn. I have never thought about a short season corn just to enjoy some late season fresh eating corn! Putting this on next years plan for sure!!

I enjoyed the information. I didn’t get the fall planting in till the middle of august so am praying for a late freeze here in 6b. Havagudun Gary. 😊

Thanks so much for sharing this info! I planted an heirloom variety of corn that is geared for container growing for the first time a few weeks ago. I kept reading about hand pollinating, but had no idea exactly how to do that, until this video! We'll see how it goes now that I know what to do! :)

My best crop of corn this year in northwest U.K. It has been very wet through the summer this year. Shows me I need to water more in normal summers. Always learning! Best wishes

The cornsilk makes good tea, if you don't get a good harvest like me.
I tried all those tricks this year.
Was actually more successful in a twenty gallon grow bag.
Nonetheless, your recommendations are top notch.
Thanks Gary!

Thanks for the valuable information shared. I'm the southern hemisphere and want to try planting maize this spring. Enjoy your harvest.

I've been doing my corn wrong. I usually grow in rows but at least 3 wide. I had marginal success last year, but this makes sense. I've also realized the importance of good compost for the garden as well as picking a location with FULL sunlight. I think I'll be trying this method next year.

I purchased a hybrid variety - suitable for containers; going to try that next year.

I find that hand pollination works very well for me!
